Jaime de Piniés

Jaime de Piniés (born November 18, 1917 in Madrid , † December 29, 2003 ibid) was a Spanish diplomat and chairman of the General Assembly of the United Nations and President of the World Security Council .

Piniés was a doctor of law ; Before he switched to the diplomatic service, he worked for the National Bank of Spain. Before joining the United Nations, he worked in diplomacy in the United States , Great Britain , Cuba and the Philippines .

Piniés represented Spain at the UN General Assembly since 1956 for a total of 28 session periods, of which he was Spain's permanent representative at the UN for 16 years (September 1968 to May 1972 and September 1973 to June 1985). In between he was again ambassador to London . From September 17, 1985 to September 16, 1986, he chaired the UN General Assembly during the 40th Regular Assembly and the 17th Special Session.

In 1960, during the General Assembly, he was involved in a loud argument with the Soviet party leader Khrushchev , when the Spanish delegation did not applaud his speech, Khrushchev cursed the Spaniards loudly in Russian and returned Piniés with Spanish curses.

Was Spanish ambassador to the UN from 1960 to 1985 with a one-year break as ambassador in London.

He was married and had two children.
