María Fernanda Espinosa Garcés (born September 7, 1964 in Salamanca ) is an Ecuadorian politician .

Life

María Fernanda Espinosa studied human geography , anthropology and linguistics at the Pontifical Catholic University of Ecuador and at Rutgers University in New Jersey.

Although Espinosa has stated on her résumé and in official UN publications that she received her PhD from Rutgers University , there are no records of her PhD in the university's archives. She has repeatedly claimed to be a PhD student, which Rutgers has denied.

With the election of Rafael Correa as President of Ecuador, Espinosa switched from working for non-governmental organizations and state institutions for nature conservation, in particular for the Ecuadorian part of the Amazon rainforest , to politics.

  • She was Foreign Minister in Rafael Correa's cabinet from January to December 2007.
  • From March 2008 to September 2009 she was the Permanent Representative of Ecuador to the United Nations .
  • From October 2009 to November 2012 she was Minister for National Cultural and Natural Heritage.
  • From November 2012 to September 2014 she was Minister of Defense.
  • From October 2014 to May 2017 she represented Ecuador at the United Nations in Geneva .
  • From May 2017 to June 2018 she was foreign minister again in Lenín Moreno's cabinet .

The General Assembly of the United Nations elected María Fernanda Espinosa as Chair on June 5, 2018 - as the fourth woman in the history of the United Nations. She took up her post in September 2018 and will hold it for one year.

As a member of the World Future Council, María Fernanda Espinosa is committed to the rights of future generations. She has published several volumes of poetry.
