Lenín Moreno (2017)

Lenín Boltaire Moreno Garcés (born March 19, 1953 in Nuevo Rocafuerte , Orellana Province ) is the incumbent President of Ecuador . From 2007 to 2013 he was Vice President under Rafael Correa . He is also a founding member of Alianza PAÍS . On April 2, 2017, Moreno was elected President of Ecuador to succeed Correa .

Life

Lenín Moreno grew up in a middle-class family. His full name is Lenín Boltaire Moreno Garcés - his parents' homage to the Russian revolutionary Vladimir Ilyich Lenin and the French philosopher Voltaire . Social commitment was exemplified by his parents, both teachers, who are committed to ensuring that children from poor families get an education and are taught both in Spanish and their indigenous languages. Lenín Moreno holds a degree in Administration from the Universidad Central del Ecuador and has worked in the tourism sector for many years. Moreno knows the Yasuní and is well informed about the back and forth about oil production in the biosphere reserve. He has been in a wheelchair since he was injured in a robbery in 1998.

He is the author of several books on humor and has received various honorary doctorates . Lenín Moreno is married to Rocío González and has three daughters: Irina, Cristina and Carina.

2017 presidential election

After Rafael Correa was not allowed to run after two terms, Lenín Moreno ran as a candidate for the government alliance PAÍS. In the first round of elections on February 19, 2017, he received 39% and thus narrowly missed the direct election victory. In the runoff election on April 2, 2017 against Guillermo Lasso from the CREO alliance , Moreno received 51.14% of the votes cast and thus became President of Ecuador from May 24, 2017. On April 18, 2017, 11 percent of the votes were counted live on television been. The recount showed only minimal deviations, neither the electoral authority nor the electoral court responded to the opposition's demands for a complete recount.

Presidency

In 2019, President Moreno was associated with illegal business in the so-called INA papers. The National Assembly began an investigation into the allegations against Moreno. The starting point was a publication by the Ecuadorian media portal “La Fuente” on February 26, 2019. The research was entitled “The offshore labyrinth of the presidential circle”. In it, Moreno was associated with offshore companies in Panama and Belize . Moreno formed the name Ina from the last letters of the first names of his daughters: Irina, Cristina and Karina.

Long-time companions Lenín Moreno and Rafael Correa are now enemies. In a referendum that Moreno put to the vote in February 2018, he achieved, among other things, that Correa will no longer be allowed to run for president in 2021. In addition, the Ecuadorian judiciary has issued an arrest warrant against Correa, who now lives in Belgium . Interpol rejected the search request in September 2018 because of the "political nature" of the proceedings. There is a widespread belief that Moreno is in the process of dismantling the social achievements of his predecessor. With this, as well as with a neoliberal economic policy and a turn away from the foreign policy pursued by his predecessor , he is looking to join forces with the rich elite . In May 2018, Moreno brought Richard Martínez , chairman of the national employers' association, into government as Minister of Economics and Finance.

In October 2019, the president briefly relocated the government to Guayaquil after violent protests against the cancellation of fuel subsidies broke out and a general strike was called. The billions in the IMF loans to reorganize the state budget were conditional on lowering subsidies.

Negotiations for the extradition of Julian Assange to the USA

In May 2017 Paul Manafort traveled to Ecuador to negotiate conditions with Lenín Moreno for an extradition of Julian Assange to the USA.

In April 2019, Moreno announced that WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange had been granted diplomatic asylum by his predecessor in the Ecuadorian embassy in London . He accused Assange of violating the basic principles of the right of asylum during his stay in the country's diplomatic mission through his aggressive and disrespectful behavior and the threats of the organization behind him against Ecuador so much that the granting of asylum was unacceptable. Assange was then arrested by Scotland Yard at the request of the Ecuadorian ambassador on the grounds of a British arrest warrant for failing to appear at a court hearing and brought before a British judge. Due to an extradition request from the USA in 2017, he initially remains in custody in Great Britain . Moreno's predecessor Correa rated the behavior of the President as “one of the most terrible acts ever hatched out of servility, malice and vindictiveness” and called his successor a “traitor”.
