Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno

Alfredo Baquerizo Moreno (born September 28, 1859 in Guayaquil , † March 20, 1951 in New York ) was an Ecuadorian politician and from September 1, 1916 to August 31, 1920 President of Ecuador.

Life

He completed his studies in literary history , art history and music at the Conservatorio Nacional in Guayaquil with a doctorate and then worked as a writer and literary scholar . As the holder of a chair for literary studies at the Colegio Vicente Rocafuerte in Guayaquil, he began to get involved in politics and was elected mayor of his hometown a little later .

Political career

In 1903 he became Secretary of State while serving as envoy to the United States . In 1906 he left the government and went first as envoy to Cuba , then to Colombia , and finally as ambassador to Peru . He was elected to the Senate in 1909 and became President of the Senate in 1912. He won the presidential elections in 1916 with 93.6% of the votes cast and served as President of Ecuador for one term. He remained a member of the Senate until 1931 and was active in public life in his home country.

Others

The scheduled settlement of the Galapagos Islands began during his term of office . In his honor, the newly founded capital of San Cristóbal was named Puerto Baquerizo Moreno .
