Radionomy is a commercial web platform that enables its users to both listen to and operate Internet radios. Both variants are free of charge for users, but when operating an Internet radio, a minimum number of daily listening hours is required. In addition to the technical platform, Radionomy also provides a music library with more than 80,000 pieces of music. Radionomy also assumes all copyright fees that are paid to the Belgian GEMA counterpart SABAM . GEMA denies the relevance of the levies to SABAM and requires German users to license their own. The company is financed through advertising that appears on the radio programs. Radionomy ceased operations on January 1, 2020.

Surname

"Radionomy" is a Portmanteau word consisting of radio (in the sense of radio ) and "Autonomy" ( English. Autonomy ). This suggests a radio program that is determined by the users themselves.

Companies

The company Radionomy SA was founded in 2007 by Alexandre Saboundjian and presented to the public for the first time in January 2008. The current platform, called G2, has been online since September 18, 2012, improving operation and offering more personalization options. According to its own information, Radionomy comprises more than 6,000 Internet radios , which together generate more than 42 million broadcast hours per month and reach a good 13 million listeners. The company has offices in Frankfurt am Main , Paris , Madrid , Luxembourg and San Francisco . The majority of Radionomy users are from France .

In October 2013, Radionomy announced that it wanted the radio makers to share in the advertising revenue among its users. So far, however, only listeners from France and the United States are considered.

In January 2014, it was announced that Radionomy had bought the music player Winamp and the streaming service SHOUTcast from AOL . In return, AOL received a stake in Radionomy.

Since April 2015, GEMA has required German users (also retrospectively) to license the content sent, as it does not recognize the relevance of payments to SABAM in Belgium for the German market.

Radionomy ceased operations on January 1, 2020. All stations were then migrated from Radionomy to SHOUTcast. However, SHOUTcast does not license the content.

Geoblocking

Radionomy is blocking its services to potential listeners in several dozen countries. a. Russia, Mexico, South Africa, Switzerland, Turkey and Brazil belong. An official overview of the blocked countries is not available, but the majority of non-European countries are in fact excluded.
