Antonio Pons
Antonio Pons Campuzano (born November 10, 1897 in Guayaquil , † January 1980 ibid) was an Ecuadorian doctor, consul, ambassador and politician and from August 20 to September 26, 1935, interim president of his country.
Pons was mayor of Guayaquil when Velasco Ibarra made him Minister of State. When Velasco Ibarra tried to expand his power by means of a coup on August 20, 1935, he was overthrown by the Ecuadorian army and power was transferred to Pons. This called presidential elections. When the triumph of the conservative candidate Alejandro Ponce became apparent in the elections , Pons transferred power to the military, which in turn appointed Federico Páez as president.
He then became Ecuador's ambassador to Argentina in late 1935 . He then withdrew from politics and lived secluded in Guayaquil and administered the haciendas he had inherited .
