Sixto Durán Ballén Cordovez (born July 14, 1921 in Boston , United States , † November 15, 2016 in Quito , Ecuador ) was an Ecuadorian politician , former President of Ecuador and an architect . He served as president from August 10, 1992 to August 10, 1996, until 1995 Alberto Dahik was his vice-president, followed by Eduardo Peña in the same position.

Life

Ballén was born in Boston because his parents were there for work. He spent his youth in the United States, where he studied architecture at Columbia University in New York City . He was then commissioned by the then Ecuadorian President Galo Plaza Lasso to rebuild the city of Ambato , as it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1949. In Ecuador he founded the Partido Social Cristiano together with Camilo Ponce Enríquez .

In February 1995, during his tenure as president, a border conflict with Peru (Conflicto limítrofe entre el Perú y el Ecuador) about the Cenepa war and the mobilization of reservists intensified . Peru was ruled by Alberto Fujimori at that time .
