Andrea Minguzzi (born February 1, 1982 in Castel San Pietro Terme ) is an Italian wrestler . In 2008 he was Olympic gold medalist in the Greco-Roman style in Beijing .

Career

Andrea Minguzzi comes from a family of wrestlers and began wrestling in 1990 at the US Placci Bubana di Bologna sports club . His first coach was his father Massimo Minguzzi. After he was promoted to the Italian top class of wrestlers in the Greco-Roman style as a junior, he moved to the Italian top club Club Atletico Cisa di Faenza , where Vincenzo Maenza , an Olympic wrestler in 1984, was club president. He later joined the Italian police and therefore moved to the Fiamme Oro Roma sports club in 2004 . His coaches there are Marco Papacci and Mauro Massaro.

Andrea Minguzzi's international career began in 1999 with a start at the Junior World Championship (Cadets) in Nyköbing, where he came fourth in the lightweight category (up to 69 kg body weight at that time).

In 2000 Andrea Minguzzi won the Italian middleweight championship for the first time. He repeated this success seven more times by 2007.

On the international wrestling mat, however, it took a long time for him to achieve greater success. So he occupied z. B. at the junior European championship 2000 in Sofia in middleweight position 15th and at the junior world championship 2002 in Nantes middleweight division 17th place. He achieved a better placement at the 2001 World Junior Championships in Tashkent , where he was welterweight after victories over Bernhard Mayr , Germany , Kishan Pawar Govind, India a . Kenneth Cook from the USA came in sixth place.

In his first participation in a World Championship for seniors in 2001 in Patras , he managed a victory over the Indian Suraj Mal, but a loss to Keith Sieracki from the USA threw him out of the race and came in 13th.

It continued in this style until 2006. Until 2006 he only occupied double-digit places, but in 2004 he managed to qualify in Novi Sad with a third place at a qualifying tournament of the FILA for participation in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens in the middleweight division. In Athens, however, after defeats against Levon Geghamjan from Armenia and Vyacheslav Makarenko from Belarus, he did not get beyond 17th place.

Andrea Minguzzi was not deterred by these failures and continued to train hard, with the best support from his employer police. In 2007 the first success came. He won a bronze medal at the European Championships in Sofia . There he defeated Wladislaw Lukasevic from Lithuania a . Wjatscheslaw Makarenko, then lost against Jan Fischer from Germany on points and then won over Attila Bátky from Slovakia and Kim-Jussi Nurmela from Finland . He suffered a major setback at the 2007 World Cup in Baku . He lost his first fight there against the Swedish Olympic champion and multiple world champion Ara Abrahamian on points. Since this defeat with 0: 9 techn. Points was very high, he landed among the 56 starters in this weight class, which meant a new record for world championships, on 45th place.

In 2008 Andrea Minguzzi managed to win another medal with third place at the European Championships in Tampere . There he defeated Nenand Zugaj from Croatia and Tarvi Thomberg from Estonia , then lost to Badri Chassaia from Georgia and then beat Timo Andre Kallio from Finland and Jan Fischer. Curiously, he received this medal from Jan Fischer as a gift, because the German was leading on points until three seconds before the end of the fight, looked at the clock and was therefore inattentive. Andrea Minguzzi recognized the situation at lightning speed and achieved a two-point ranking with one quick move and thus won this fight, the European Championship bronze medal and the ticket to the Olympic Games in Beijing , while Jan Fischer had to be satisfied with fifth place and also in later qualifying Tournaments was no longer successful.

The Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 saw Andrea Minguzzi well prepared. He started in the middleweight division and defeated Melonin Noumouvi from France , ex-world champion Alexei Mischin from Russia , Ara Abrahamian and, in the final battle, the young Hungarian Zoltán Fodor , who like Minguzzi also played for AC Auerbach in the 2nd German Bundesliga , on points and won the gold medal.
