Artur Paweł Michalkiewicz (born September 11, 1977 in Wrocław ) is a former Polish wrestler . He became the European middleweight champion in the Greco-Roman style in 2006 .

Career

Artur Michalkiewicz started wrestling as a teenager in 1988 in his hometown. He focused on the Greco-Roman style and became a member of the sports club WKS Śląsk Wrocław . His first coach was Jan Stroiny, later Jerzy Adamek and Józef Tracz joined them. In order to be able to practice his sport, he became a member of the army and, after he was able to take home his first successes, started in the German Bundesliga for SV Johannis Nürnberg , KSV Köllerbach , KSV 07 Witten and 1. Luckenwalder SC . At a height of "only" 1.73 meters, he was a stocky, very powerful wrestler.

He made his first appearance at an international championship when he was a junior. However, he came in the European Junior Championships in 1995 in Witten in the weight class up to 74 kg only on 10th place. In 1997 he was in Istanbul behind the Greek Georgios Tziolas vice European champion and in Turku behind the Hungarian Sándor Bárdosi vice world champion in the junior division.

In 1998 Artur Michalkiewicz was the first Polish champion in the senior welterweight division , which was followed by several Polish championship titles. In 1999 he made his debut at an international senior championship at the European Championships in Sofia. He finished 8th in the welterweight division. In the next few years he then took part regularly in world and European championships, initially in welterweight and from 2002 in middleweight. He could not win any medals, although he defeated many world class wrestlers. In 2000 he also managed to qualify for the Sydney Olympic Games. In Sydney he defeated the welterweight Faafetai Iutana from Samoa, but lost to Vyacheslav Makarenko from Belarus and Dawid Manukjan from Ukraine and reached 9th place.

In 2004 he could not qualify for the Olympic Games in Athens. In 2006 he achieved the greatest success of his career in Moscow. With victories over Nazmi Avluca , Turkey, Andrea Minguzzi , Italy, Alexei Mischin , Russia, Vyacheslav Makarenko and Denis Forow from Armenia, he became European middleweight champion. Artur Michalkiewicz was also on the medal course for a long time at the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou. There he defeated Vyacheslav Makarenko, Aleksandr Doxturishvili from Uzbekistan and Ara Abrahamian from Sweden, but then surprisingly lost to Kim-Jussi Nurmela from Finland. Since he did not reach the final, he was eliminated and ended up only in 7th place.

In 2008 he succeeded in participating in the Olympic Games for the second time. In Beijing, however, he lost his first fight against Bradley Vering from the United States, which resulted in his departure. Therefore he only came in 16th place. One month after this Olympics he achieved a prestigious success, because he became military world champion in Split ahead of Andrei Baranowski, Belarus, Nenad Žugaj , Croatia and Jan Fischer , Germany.

At the end of 2009 Artur Michalkiewicz ended his international and at the end of 2011 his national wrestling career.
