Frithiof Mårtensson
Folke Frithiof Martens Mårtensson (born May 19, 1884 in Eslöv , † June 20, 1956 in Stockholm ) was a Swedish wrestler . He was Olympic champion in London in 1908 in the Greco-Roman style middleweight .
Career
Frithiof Mårtensson grew up in Eslöv and started wrestling there. Because of the better opportunities, he soon moved to the large sports club IK Malmö . Even if no individual results are known from his early wrestling days, he has to be one of the best Swedish wrestlers in Greco-Roman. Style have heard, because he was in 1908 for the Olympic Games in London sent. He wrestled there in the middleweight division (1908 in London up to 73 kg body weight). In London he won over Josef Jakoubek from Bohemia , G. Bradshaw from Great Britain , Axel Larsson from Sweden , Anders Andersen from Denmark and Mauritz Andersson from Sweden and won the gold medal .
After these Olympic Games he started in December 1908 in Vienna at an unofficial world championship in middleweight (up to 75 kg body weight). At this world championship a different set of rules was applied than at the Olympic Games in London. While a wrestler was eliminated from the Olympic Games after his first defeat, he was only eliminated from this World Cup after his third defeat. As a result, the participants in this world championship had to contest a lot of fights. To make this clear, all the fights that Frithiof Mårtensson had to contest in Vienna are mentioned here: he won over Heinrich Schinner, Josef Petzka, Simon Jellik, Josef Drozda, all Austria and Christoph Übler , Germany , fought against Harald Christensen , Denmark and Andreas Mrosek, Austria tied and lost to Alois Toduschek , Robert Dirry and Stephan Czerny from Austria. He finished 5th. It won this world championship Robert Dirry ahead of Alois Totuscheck and Harald Christensen. Dirry and Totuscheck had not participated in the Olympic Games in London. Harald Christensen started there without success in the light heavyweight division.
In 1909 Frithiof Mårtensson started at an unofficial European championship in Malmö in the middleweight division and won the title there.
In 1910 he was also at an unofficial European championship in Budapest in lightweight (up to 70 kg body weight) at the start, but retired there with a defeat in his third fight against the German Max Beeskow and only came in 7th place.
Further results are not known.
