Career

Robert Dirry, whose dates of birth and death are not known, lived in Vienna and initially belonged as a wrestler to the Vienna sports club, where Alois Toduschek trained him. In 1909 he moved to the Vienna Athletics Club , where he was trained by Henri Bauer (wrestler) . He wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style. In his day there were only two weight classes, heavy and light. He always wrestled in the light weight class, which usually had its limit at 75 kg body weight.

In 1908 Robert Dirry became world champion in his weight class in Vienna. He had to contest nine fights, of which he won seven. He fought a draw against his compatriot Alois Toduschek and suffered a defeat against Harald Christensen from Denmark . Nevertheless, he won the title ahead of Alois Toduschek and Harald Christensen.

At the World Championships in Vienna in 1909, Robert Dirry took 2nd place. Also at this world championship he fought a draw against Alois Toduschek. The decisive factor in preventing him from becoming world champion again was a defeat against Ludwig Kossuth, Austria, whom Alois Toduschek had defeated. Alois Toduschek therefore won the world championship ahead of Robert Dirry and Andreas Mrosek, Austria.

Robert Dirry also came second at the unofficial World Cup in Vienna in 1910. He was a victim of the unbalanced scoring system at this World Cup, because he defeated nine opponents, including Alois Toduschek, Heinrich Rauß, Peter Kokotowitsch and Andreas Mrosek, all of Austria and remained undefeated. Nevertheless, he was only second behind Alois Toduschek, because Toduschek had more shoulder wins than Dirry.

Another remarkable result in the wrestling career of Robert Dirry is his third place in the Austrian championship in 1911 in the weight class up to 75 kg behind Alois Toduschek and Béla Varga from Hungary . This is also the last known result from Robert Dirry's wrestling career.

As a boxer, Robert Dirry never appeared in Austria or Germany.

In 1912 Robert Dirry emigrated to the United States. He lived mostly in New York , called himself Bob Diry or Bob Deery and began a short boxer career there. This career as a boxer was not very successful, because in 1913 and 1914 he won only one of seven fights he played and lost six.

He then worked for many years as a wrestling and boxing coach at a New York sports club.
