After three wins he lost against the eventual European champion Max Beeskow from Germany .

At the World Cup in Helsinki in 1911 he had to compete a total of seven times, fought four times and won three fights, which was enough for 2nd place. The winner was Nestori Touminen from Finland .

The Olympic Games in Stockholm in 1912 were the highlight of Gustaf Malmström's career. He started again in the lightweight division, with a total of 48 participants at the start. After six sovereign victories, Gustaf faced the Finn Eemeli Väre in the final , against whom he lost and thus won the silver medal in front of Edvin Mattiasson, Sweden , Jan Baley, Bohemia and Erik Lund, Sweden.
