Eemeli Vare
Eemeli (Emil) Ernst Väre (born September 28, 1885 in Kärkölä ; † January 31, 1974 ibid) was a Finnish wrestler.
Career
Emil Väre was one of the best Finnish wrestlers from the early years of modern wrestling. He came from Viipuri and belonged to the local wrestling club "Tarmo". In 1909 he was the first Finnish master in the Greco-Roman style in the class up to 73 kg body weight.
Emil Väre took part in four international championships, all of which he won. In 1911 he became world champion in Helsinki in middleweight (up to 73 kg body weight). He played 10 fights, won seven of them and fought three times. In 1912 he won the European Middleweight Championship in Budapest (up to 75 kg body weight). Victories over Rezsö Steiner, Hungary, Gyula Zólyomi, Hungary, Max Beeskow, Germany and Arpád Miskey, Hungary, are documented.
At the Olympic Games of the same year in Stockholm he won the gold medal in the lightweight (up to 67.5 kg body weight) with victories over Jan Balej, Bohemia, Jean Bouffechoux, France, Georg Baumann, Russia, Alessandro Covre, Italy, Edvin Matiasson, Sweden , and Gustaf Malmström , Sweden. He suffered a defeat against Oscar Kaplur from Russia , but it no longer had a negative effect on him.
Eight years later, at the Olympic Games in Antwerp in 1920 , Emil Väre achieved a second Olympic victory in convincing style. He shouldered his five opponents Charles Frisenfeldt from Denmark, Fristz Christiansen from Denmark, Rohon from France , Frits Janssens from Belgium and Taavi Tamminen from Finland.
