Davor Štefanek (born September 12, 1985 in Subotica ) is a Serbian wrestler in the discipline Greco-Roman wrestling. He was world champion in 2014 and Olympic champion in 2016.

Athletic career

Štefanek started wrestling in 2000. Until 2012 he mostly competed in the weight class up to 60 kilograms. In 2003 he won the silver medal at the Junior World Championships. In 2004 he was second at the European Championships and third at the Junior European Championships. At the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens , he finished 18th. In 2005 he won the silver medal at the Mediterranean Games . At the Junior World Championships in 2005 he won the title, a month later he was third at the Junior European Championships.

In 2008, the 1.70 m tall Štefanek won the bronze medal at the European Championships in Tampere . At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , he finished 15th. In 2009 he reached fifth place both at the European Championships in Vilnius and at the World Championships in Herning . At the Mediterranean Games in 2009, he won in the weight class up to 60 kilograms in the Greco-Roman style, he also entered a weight class higher in the freestyle and took fifth place there. In 2010 and 2011 he did not reach any top placements at European and World Championships. At the European Championships in Belgrade in 2012 , he won a bronze medal.

In 2013, Štefanek switched to the weight class up to 66 kilograms. At the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent , he won the title against the Iranian Omid Haji Noroozi . The following year he won a bronze medal at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas . In March 2016 he reached the final of the European Championships in Riga and won silver behind the Russian Islambek Albijew . Five months later the Olympic wrestling tournament took place in Rio de Janeiro . Štefanek defeated the German Frank Stäbler in the quarterfinals , the Georgian Schmagi Bolkwadse in the semifinals and the Armenian Mihran Harutjunjan in the final .

2017 won silver at the European Championships in Novi Sad behind the Russian Artyom Surkow . In 2018 he won silver in the weight class up to 77 kilograms at the Mediterranean Games. At the 2018 World Championships in Budapest , he competed in the weight class up to 67 kilograms and lost the final against Artyom Surkov.
