Steeve François Fabien Guénot (born October 2, 1985 in Chalon-sur-Saône ) is a French wrestler . He was Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman style lightweight at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 and won a bronze medal in the same weight class and style at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

Career

Steeve Guénot comes from a family of wrestlers. His father Christophe Guénot was a wrestler, referee and club official, brother Christophe Guénot won a bronze welterweight medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing . His mother and two sisters are also fond of wrestling.

Steeve Guénot has been wrestling since 1990 and only in the Greco-Roman style. He is a member of the US Metro Paris Association (Union sportive metropolitaine des transports). He is 1.72 m tall and weighs about 70 kg. He has been a member of the French national wrestling team since he was 17 years old. His coach is the former world champion Patrice Mourier . Professionally, he is an agent of the Securite GPSR in Seine-Saint-Denis, where he has every freedom for daily training.

In 2001 Steeve Guénot was the first French junior champion in the weight class up to 58 kg body weight. At the French Senior Championships in 2003, he took 2nd place, 3rd place in 2005 and 1st place in 2007, both in the lightweight category.

He made his debut on the international wrestling mat at the 2004 European Junior Championships in Murska Sobota in the lightweight category. He wasn't very successful there, because he lost his first fight against Tiziano Corriga from Italy and won the next round over Ismael Navarro Sanches from Spain . These results only reached 17th place.

In 2005 Steeve Guénot won his first medal at an international wrestling championship, namely the European Junior Championship in Wroclaw . He came there behind Dimitri Pyschkow from Ukraine and Ionel Puşcaşu from Romania in 3rd place. In the same year it was used at the World Seniors Championships in Budapest . There he had to learn the hard way, because he lost his first fight against Ionuț Panait from Romania and only came in 29th place in the lightweight.

His next assignment at an international championship took place again at the 2007 European championship in Sofia . There he fared not much better in the lightweight than at the 2005 World Cup, because he lost his first fight against Sylvester Charzewski from Poland and ended up in 16th place. He then made a huge leap forward at the 2007 World Cup in Baku . He won there over Sunil Kumar from India , Darchan Bayakmetow from Kazakhstan , the 2005 world champion Nikolai Gergow from Bulgaria (with 6: 1 technical points) and Arman Adikjan from Armenia on points. In the final he faced Fərid Mansurov from Azerbaijan , against whom he lost just on points. The reward for his good performance was winning the runner-up world title.

Steeve Guénot suffered a setback at the 2008 European Championships in Tampere . He lost there in the first fight against the German champion Marcus Thätner on points. Since Thätner did not reach the final, Steeve Guénot did not make it into the hopeful round and only placed 20th.

Steeve Guénot celebrates his Olympic victory in Beijing

Steeve Guénot traveled to the Olympic Games in Beijing in excellent shape. He therefore defeated Alain Milián from Cuba , Tamás Lőrincz from Hungary , Michail Semenow from Belarus , Darchan Bayakmetow from Kazakhstan and in the final Kanatbek Begaliew from Kyrgyzstan and became Olympic champion in the lightweight, Greco-Roman style. He was the first Frenchman to win a gold medal in wrestling again after 1936, when Emile Poilve was Olympic champion in middleweight freestyle wrestling in Berlin .

Steeve Guénot continued his wrestling career after Beijing . In 2009, however, he only finished 11th at the European lightweight championship in Vilnius and only 15th at the world championship in Herning / Denmark . He did much better at the international championships in 2010. This year he fought his way to the European lightweight championship in Baku with victories over Manuel Almeida, Portugal , Frank Stäbler , Germany and Sergei Krasilnikow , Ukraine, after a semi-final defeat against Ionuț Panait, Romania , an EM bronze medal . At the World Cup in Moscow , he defeated Aleksandar Maksimović from Serbia and Faruk Sahin from the United States after losing his first fight against Armen Vardanyan from Ukraine. In the end, he lost the fight for a bronze medal against Wassif Arzimanov from Turkey .

In 2011 Steeve Guenot was only able to place himself in 10th place at the European Championships in Dortmund and also only came 12th at the World Championships in Istanbul . But in April 2012 he managed to get a starting place at the first continental Olympic qualification tournament in Sofia by winning a tournament. He won there in the lightweight before Edgaras Venckaitis , Lithuania, Emilian Todorow , Bulgaria and Vitali Rəhimov , Azerbaijan. At the 2012 Summer Olympics in London he won with victories over Wuileixis Rivas Espinosa, Venezuela and Saeid Mourad Abdvali , Iran, a defeat against Kim Hyeon-woo , South Korea, which was very close with 1: 2 rounds and 2: 3 points and one Victory over Pedro Isaac Mulens Herrera, Cuba, a bronze medal.

He continued his career in 2013, but switched to the next higher weight class, the welterweight. At the European Championships this year in Tbilisi, he first won over the Italian Ciro Russo, but lost in his next fight against Jawor Janakiew , Bulgaria on points and was eliminated. It came in 10th place in Tbilisi.

Because he missed the doping tests three times , Guénot was banned for one year in 2014.

Guénot lives east of Paris in the city of Bagnolet . Since 2007, he and his brother Christophe have been employed as a security guard at the Paris state transport company RATP as part of a professional partnership program of the French Ministry of Health, Youth and Sport .
