Ryszard Wolny

Ryszard Marcin Wolny (born March 24, 1969 in Racibórz , Silesia ) is a Polish wrestler . He was Olympic champion in the Greco-Roman style lightweight in 1996 .

Career

Ryszard Wolny grew up in his hometown Racibórz and attended a technical school there, which he graduated as a mechanic in 1990. He later visited a branch of the Poznan Sports University in Gorzów Wielkopolski , where he trained as a sports teacher specializing in wrestling.

He started wrestling in 1980 and became a member of the MKZ Unia (Union) Racibórz sports club . He was a member of this club without interruption until the end of his career in 2005. In Racibórz he was trained by Bogdan Merkiel and Aleksander Zajaczkowski. In the Polish national team Stanisław Krzesiński , Piotr Starczyński , Andrzej Supron and Ryszard Świerad were added as coaches. As an adult, he started out as a bantamweight at a height of 1.70 meters , but quickly grew into featherweight and lightweight. Ryszard Wolny is also very well known in German wrestling circles because he wrestled in the German Bundesliga from 1990 to 2005 at KSV Germania Aalen , VfK Schifferstadt and KSK Konkordia Neuss and thus made a living. He only wrestled in the Greco-Roman style.

After he became Polish junior bantamweight champion in 1987, he began his international wrestling career that year at the Junior European Championship (Juniors) in Katowice . He started it right away with a title win, because he became Junior European Champion with a victory in the final over Petteri Meskanen from Finland . To this title he was able to add the junior European championship title of the Espoirs age group (up to the age of 20) in Wałbrzych in 1988 . Again in the bantamweight he defeated Kamu Ambarzumjan from the USSR in the final battle . In 1989 he let these titles follow the European championship title in the senior featherweight division at the European Championships in Oulu . In the final, he defeated the Hungarian Jozsef Szuromski . He then fought his way to third place at the 1989 Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Budapest behind Sawko Sawow, Bulgaria and Juan Luis Maren Delis from Cuba . In 1989 he also took part in the Senior World Championships in Martigny / Switzerland . He was eliminated there after the 3rd round, although his exact placement, which was not among the top 10, is nowhere recorded (see Der Ringer magazine, No. 9/89, page 4).

Ryszard Wolny won two bronze medals at the international championships in 1990. At the European championships in Poznan he finished behind Gennadi Atmakin from the USSR and Jenő Bódi from Hungary and at the World Championships in Rome - Ostia behind Mario Olivera from Cuba and Gennadi Atmakin in each case Featherweight 3rd place each.

After that he could not win any medals at the World and European Championships until 1994. Although he reached fourth or fifth place four times in five international championships in those years, he was always eliminated before reaching the fights for the medals, mostly against Islam Dugutschijew from Russia , Ghani Yalouz from France or Attila Repka from Hungary. In 1995 he was then vice European champion in Besançon in the lightweight. He lost the final fight against Ghani Yalouz. At this year's World Cup in Prague , he ended up on the ungrateful fourth after a semi-final defeat against Rustam Adschi from Ukraine (0: 5 points) and a defeat in the battle for the bronze medal against Jannis Zamanduridis from Germany (3: 4 points) . Space.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 , Ryszard Wolny disappointed, because he only came in 12th there and thus missed the qualifying standards for the Olympic Games in Atlanta . But he was lucky because he received a wild card from the international wrestling association Fila for participating in these games. In Atlanta, like the entire Polish team, he presented himself in excellent form. There he defeated Attila Repka (6: 1 points), Liubal Colas Oris , Kuba (6: 0 points), Grigori Pulyayev, Uzbekistan (3: 0 points) and Ghani Yalouz (7: 0 points) and won the Olympic gold medal with a points ratio of 22: 1 . Besides him, Włodzimierz Zawadzki and Andrzej Wroński won gold medals in Greco-Roman style from his Polish teammates in Atlanta .

In the following years he could no longer build on these great successes. At the 1997 World Cup in Wrocław , he retired early after losing to Rustam Adschi and only came in 10th. He did better at the 1998 World Cup in Gävle , where he finished 6th. In 1999 he won another silver medal at the European Championships in Sofia . He defeated Adam Juretzko from Germany clearly on points (7: 0) in the semifinals, just as clearly to lose in the final against Alexei Gluschkow from Russia (0: 9 points).

At the Olympic Games in Sydney in 2000 he lost his first fight against Alexei Gluschkow on points and was then only able to reach 7th place despite two victories over Rustam Adschi and Uladsimir Kapytau from Belarus . In 2001 and 2002 Ryszard Wolny did not take part in any international championships. In 2003 he dared to make a comeback. He started at the World Championships in Créteil and came in 12th place with victories over Mohammed Bargnaoui from Tunisia and Mchitar Manukjan from Kazakhstan and a defeat against Manuchar K Wirkwelia from Georgia. In 2004, already 35 years old, he managed to qualify for the fourth time to take part in the Olympic Games in two tournaments. In Athens he could not do anything in the lightweight against his much younger competitors and was defeated on points against Fərid Mansurov from Azerbaijan and against Juan Luis Maren Delis from Cuba and therefore only finished 17th.

Then he ended his international and in 2005 his national wrestling career. In 2006 and 2010 he was elected to the Racibórz City Council, where he still lives. Since 2007 he has also been the coach of the Greco-Roman style wrestlers for the Polish national team.
