Włodzimierz Jan Zawadzki (born September 28, 1967 in Polany , Masovian Voivodeship ) is a former Polish wrestler . He became an Olympic featherweight champion in the Greco-Roman style in 1996 .

Career

Wlodzimierz Zawadzki grew in his hometown and played there as a child soccer . He didn't start wrestling until he was 13 years old. He joined the sports club MZKS Orzel Wierzbica , where Marian Osinksi was his trainer. After graduating from high school, he joined the army and moved to the sports club CWKS Legia Warsaw . During his long career he had several coaches, the most important of which were Ksawery Biederman, Bolesław Dubicki and Stanisław Krzesiński . He concentrated entirely on the Greco-Roman style and as an adult with a height of 1.67 meters always wrestled in the featherweight, the weight class up to 62, 63 and 60 kg body weight. From 1998 he also wrestled in the German Bundesliga for many years. The VfK Schifferstadt and the 1. Luckenwalder SC , where he was active until 2006, i.e. until he was 39, were his clubs. Since the end of his active career he has been working as a wrestler trainer in Poland.

At first, Włodzimierz Zawadzki's career was restrained. Although he was once Polish junior champion, it took him until he was 23 years old before he was accepted into the Polish national wrestling team. He owed this to an injury to the Polish featherweight champion of those years Mieczysław Tracz, in whose place he was used in 1990 at the Stanisław Pytlasiński tournament in Warsaw , where he finished 2nd in featherweight. A year later, in 1991, he started at the European Championships in Aschaffenburg , where he immediately won the European Championship. In the final battle, he defeated the German Mario Büttner . At the 1991 World Cup in Varna , he was not so successful. He took 8th place there.

In 1992 Włodzimierz Zawadzki qualified for a start at the Olympic Games in Barcelona . He won there first over Shigeki Nishiguchi from Japan and Hu Guohong from China , but lost on points in his third fight against the 1991 world champion Sergei Martynow from Russia . With another victory over the Swiss Hugo Dietsche, he won the right to fight for the Olympic bronze medal against Juan Luis Maren Delis from Cuba . But he lost this fight and therefore had to make do with the ungrateful 4th place.

In 1993 he came in 6th place at the World Championships in Stockholm . In 1994 he won a bronze medal at the World Championships in Tampere behind Sergei Martynow and the Bulgarian Ivan Radew . He was very successful in 1995. First he won the European featherweight title for the second time at the European Championships in Besançon . He defeated five world-class athletes with Ivan Radew, Usama Aziz, Sweden , Igor Petrenko , Belarus , Mehmet Akif Pirim , Turkey and Sergei Martynow. At the World Championships in Prague he defeated u. a. Artur Alexanian from Germany and again Mehmet Akif Pirim, but lost in the final to Sergei Martynow just on points and became vice world champion.

At the European Championships in Budapest in 1996 Włodzimierz Zawadzki lost in the semifinals against Grigori Kamuschenko from Ukraine and he also lost the fight for the European Championship bronze medal against Mchitar Manukjan from Armenia . He came back to the ungrateful 4th place. The 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta saw a well-prepared Włodzimierz Zawadzki who was full of self-confidence. He dominated all his opponents clearly and won the Olympic gold medal in a superior style with victories over Igor Petrenko, Usama Aziz, Koba Guliaschwili , Georgia , Grigori Kamuschenko and Juan Luis Maren Delis .

In the following years Włodzimierz Zawadzki was still very successful on the international wrestling mat. In 1999 he became European champion for the third time in Sofia and defeated Akaki Chachua from Georgia in the final , after defeating Şeref Eroğlu from Turkey in the semifinals . At the 1999 World Championships in Athens , he came in featherweight only on the 9th place and therefore had to qualify for participation in the 2000 Olympic Games in Sydney . He succeeded in doing this in three tournaments in Faenza , Clermont-Ferrand and Tashkent . At the games in Sydney he could not do anything, because he met Warteres Samurgaschew from Russia and Şeref Eroğlu, to whom he lost and therefore only came in 19th place.

In 2002 he became vice world champion in featherweight again in Moscow . After six wins, u. a. via Djamel Ainaoui , France , Akaki Chachua and Roberto Monzón from Cuba, in the final he met Armen Nazarjan , an Armenian starting for Bulgaria, to whom he had to admit defeat on points. In 2004, at the age of 37, he competed at the Olympic Games in Athens for the fourth time . There he had to admit defeat to the much younger Jung Ji-hyun from South Korea and Vitali Rəhimov from Azerbaijan and came in 16th.
