Peter Behl comes from a Mömbris wrestling family. His father Arnold Behl was an active wrestler himself and in 1978 co-founded the RWG Mömbris-Königshofen , the club to which Peter Behl also belongs. The RWG Mömbris-Königshofen belongs to the Hessian Wrestling Association, Mömbris and Königshofen are in Bavaria .

Peter Behl started in the junior division, at that time still for SV Königshofen for the first time at a German championship. He took 5th place in the weight class up to 27 kg body weight. Starting in 1978 for the RWG Mömbris-Königshofen, he won a total of seven German championship titles in the age groups youth A and juniors by 1984. In 1983 he took part in a German championship for the first time in the senior light flyweight division and finished second behind Markus Scherer from VfK Schifferstadt. In 1985 he was the first German bantamweight champion. In this weight class he also won the German championship title in 1986 and 1987. In 1993 and 1995, Peter Behl was German featherweight champion. Outstanding were his duels, which he delivered at the German championships with his long-time training partner Rifat Yildiz.

Peter Behl made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 1983 at the Junior World Championships (Juniors) in Oak Lawn, United States. In the flyweight division he took an excellent 2nd place behind Eduard Awakjan from the Soviet Union. At the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) 1985 in Colorado Springs, he just missed the medal ranks in bantamweight with a 4th place. With a 2nd place he then won a medal again in the bantamweight division at the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in 1986 in Malmö.

In April 1986 Peter Behl made his debut in an international senior championship at the European Championships in Piraeus. In the bantamweight he lost after good performances against Keijo Pehkonen from Finland and against Mieczyslaw Tracz from Poland each just on points and reached the 10th place. At the European Championships in 1988 in Kolbotn, Norway, he started in featherweight. There he defeated Carlos Fernandez from Spain, Karl Tusch from Austria and Hüseyin Demirtas from Turkey. Then he lost to Jenő Bódi from Hungary and to Aristidis Arutik Rubenjan from the Soviet Union and took 4th place. Peter Behl also fought in featherweight at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . He won there first over Carlos Fernandez, then lost to Hugo Dietsche from Switzerland, defeated Zeki Şahin from Turkey, lost to Jenő Bódi and beat Ike Andersson from the United States in the fight for 5th place.

He came in 6th place.

In the German Bundesliga , Behl played 298 fights for RWG Mömbris-Königshofen and led this club to three German vice-team championship titles.

In his long career in wrestling, Peter Behl was repeatedly plagued by serious injuries. It is admirable how he kept motivated, trained and started again. In order to get an idea of how stressful wrestling can be for an athlete's muscles, bones, tendons and ligaments, the injuries Peter Behl suffered during his career are shown here: meniscus surgery in 1987, further knee surgery and protracted arm injury in 1989, cruciate ligament rupture in 1990 and rupture of the inner ligament on the other knee, 1991 herniated disc, 1992 ruptured latissimus on the left shoulder.

After the end of his career, Peter Behl worked as a trainer in the Hessian Wrestling Association and at his home club RWG Mömbris-Königshofen. He runs a fitness studio in Mömbris and is also active in local politics.
