Markus Scherer
Markus Scherer (born June 20, 1962 in Ludwigshafen am Rhein ) is a former German wrestler . He was an Olympic silver medalist in 1984 and European champion in 1989 in the Greco-Roman style in paper weight.
Career
Markus Scherer is the youngest of three wrestling brothers (Freddy, Bernd, Markus). You started wrestling at the end of the 1960s with successful coach Walter Gehring, who shaped a number of Palatinate wrestlers into world-class athletes.
Like his older brothers, Markus Scherer already belonged to the top German class in Greco-Roman style as a teenager in his age group . In 1973, at the age of 12, he took 3rd place in the German student championships (age group up to 14 years) in the class up to 25 kg body weight. In 1975 Scherer became the German master student in the class up to 31 kg. He became German youth champion in the class up to 44 kg body weight in 1980 and German junior champion in 1981 and 1982 (each in the class up to 48 kg). In 1983 Markus Scherer was the first German champion in the senior class in paper weight (light flyweight). He now belonged to the “Wilfried Dietrich Club” VfK Schifferstadt .
As senior wrestlers, the three Scherer brothers usually weighed between 50 kg and 55 kg. Since they wrestled exclusively in the Greco-Roman style, they almost always competed with one another. In order to achieve international success, they also had to train to paper weight (up to 48 kg) due to their physical requirements.
Of the three brothers, Markus Scherer achieved the greatest successes on an international level. As early as 1982 in Leipzig he was the Junior European Champion in paper weight ahead of Bratan Zenow (Bulgaria) and Magyatdin Allachwerdijew (USSR). In 1983 Markus Scherer became military world champion (CISM organization) and took a good 4th place at the European paper weight championship in Budapest . In the fall of the same year he was able to celebrate winning the runner-up world championship in Kiev .
In 1984, Markus Scherer focused entirely on the Olympic Games in Los Angeles . He fought excellently there and only lost in the paper weight in the final against the Italian Vincenzo Maenza .
In the next few years, Scherer struggled to avoid the exhausting training, at international championships also in flyweight. Although he did not win any medals in those years, he achieved some excellent placements, e.g. B. 6th place at the 1985 World Championships in Kolbotn , 4th place at the 1987 European Championships in Tampere and 6th place at the 1988 Olympic Games in Seoul . However, Markus Scherer achieved a huge success at the 1989 European Championship in Oulu in the paper weight category. With victories over three wrestlers from the Eastern Bloc countries, who dominated the wrestling at that time, he became European champion.
After that, Markus Scherer was active on an international level until 1991, but was no longer able to build on the great successes. When he no longer qualified for the Olympic Games in Barcelona in 1992 , he ended his international wrestling career.
Markus Scherer worked for the city administration of Schifferstadt for several years. After he had qualified accordingly on the second educational path, he completed a degree as a sports teacher. He is currently the trainer and manager of the Schifferstadt Olympic base. Markus Scherer is also very successful in this area; one of his students is Denis Kudla , who became junior world champion in wrestling in 2011 and even won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro in August 2016. Scherer's son Marvin is also celebrating successes on the wrestling mat; In 2008, at the age of 20, he became German junior champion in the weight class up to 50 kg.
