Ivan Adutschinowitsch Samtajew ( Russian Иван Адучинович Самтаев ; * 1964 ) is a former Russian wrestler . He was the 1986 European champion in the Greco-Roman style in paper weight.

Career

Ivan Samtajew comes from the Russian Altai Republic in Siberia . He started wrestling as a teenager. As an adult, he joined the Russian Army and became a member of the SKA Gorno-Altaisk Army Sports Club . He concentrated entirely on the Greco-Roman style and competed in paper weight, the lightest weight class (up to 48 kg body weight).

His international career began in 1983 when he took second place at the Junior World Championships (Espoirs) in Kristiansund / Norway in the paper weight category behind Ilie Muti from Romania and ahead of Jon Rønningen , Norway, Orze Orzew , Bulgaria and Shawn Sheldon , USA . In 1984 he competed in the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in Frederikshavn / Denmark and was there in paper weight ahead of Andreas Klektiven, GDR , Niculae Onica, Romania and Achim Heugabel, FRG , European Junior Champion.

Ivan Samtayev found it much more difficult to get into a top position in the former Soviet Union. The reason was the high performance and the large number of good Soviet wrestlers. At that time, the Soviet Union had up to five wrestlers of equal value in each weight class and in each style, who were able to win titles at international championships. In the weight class and at the time of Ivan Samtajew these were z. B. Timor Taimuras Kasaraschwili , Məhəddin Allahverdiyev , Wassili Anikin , Vladimir Shatumow , Sergei Suvorov and Alexander Ignatenko . This list is not yet complete.

In 1986 Iwan Samtajew started at the Grand Prix of the Federal Republic of Germany in Freiburg im Breisgau in paper weight and won there ahead of Markus Scherer from Germany and the Japanese Ebina. In the same year he was then used at the only international championship in which he was allowed to participate, the European Championship in Athens . He convinced there in the paper weight completely and won the title there before the multiple world and European champion Bratan Zenow from Bulgaria and the later Olympic champion Vincenzo Maenza from Italy .

Despite this success, Ivan Samtajew was no longer used in any international championship. He was only at a World Cup tournament in Oak Lawns in the United States in 1986 and won there ahead of Masanori Ohashi from Japan and Eric Wetzel from the United States. In 1987 he started at the FILA Grand Prix Gala in Budapest , but only finished 10th and last. After that he will no longer appear in any winners list.
