Shawn Rodney Sheldon (born November 18, 1964 in Norwich , Connecticut ) is a retired American wrestler . He was runner-up in the Greco-Roman style flyweight championship in 1991.

Career

Shawn Sheldon, now a West Palm Beach , Fla., Resident began wrestling as a teenager at Columbia Voorheesville High School in 1976. He specialized in the Greco-Roman style and booked his first success with a 3rd place at the High School Championships in New York . In 1986 he won the NCAA Div. III National Flyweight Championship (USA Student Championship). He started for the SUNY (State University of New York), which he visited in the meantime. In addition to wrestling at university, Shawn also started for the AAU New York Athletic Club and won the USA championship in paper and flyweight eight times over the following years.

Shawn made his debut on the international wrestling mat in 1982 at the World Youth Championship in Colorado Springs , where he finished 4th in the paperweight division. In addition to many starts at major international World Cup tournaments, in which Shawn mostly achieved excellent results, he also started four times at the Pan American Games and won four medals. However, he was not granted a victory.

In 1990 he started for the first time at a world championship for seniors in Rome and took 6th place in the flyweight division. A year later, at the 1991 World Cup in Varna , Shawn achieved his greatest international success by winning the runner-up title. In the final he was defeated by the Cuban Raúl Martínez Alemán , to whom he was also defeated at the Pan-American Games of the same year.

At the 1992 Olympic Games in Barcelona , Shawn just missed a medal with fourth place in the flyweight division. In the battle for the bronze medal, he lost to the Korean Cape Min-Kyung .

Shawn achieved a very good result with 5th place in the flyweight division at the 1995 World Championships in Prague . In the qualification for the Olympic Games 1996 Shawn failed to Brandon Paulson .

Shawn Sheldon could be seen with different results on the international wrestling mats until the year 2000. From 1991, however, he was already working as a wrestling trainer at SUNY and later at other universities. He has also been the coach of the New York Athletic Club for years and recently coach of the US national team in the Greco-Roman style. In 2005 he was named the best US coach in the Greco-Roman style. He is also a member of the Athletes' Commission in the US Wrestling Association.
