At the age of 20, he started at the 1991 World Cup in Varna , where he was clearly a master of flyweight. On the way to the title he defeated u. a. the 1989 and 1990 world paperweight champion Oleg Kutscherenko from the USSR and the 1988 Olympic flyweight champion Jon Rønningen from Norway . In the final, he won over Shawn Sheldon from the United States clearly on points.

He showed his best behavior there again and was again world champion in flyweight. He defeated it in the pool u. a. Alfred Ter-Mkrtchyan from Germany just on points (3: 2 technical points) and beat Armen Nasarjan from Armenia 4: 2 technical points in the final . Points.
In 1994 and 1995 he disappointed again at the World Championships. In 1994 in Tampere he only came in 11th place and in 1995 in Prague only in 17th place.
After this poor performance, he was no longer used by Cuba in any international championship. In the meantime, Raúl Martínez has taken over the management of a regional wrestling academy in Cuba and also works there as a youth coach in the Greco-Roman style.
