Career

Ercan Yıldız started wrestling in his native town in 1988. His first club was Kırıkkale Belediye Spor Kulübü . In the course of his career he started for B. Belediye Istanbul and for Ankara MTA Spor Kulübünde . He decided on the Greco-Roman style and was u. a. trained by Gazi Özbilgin, Haluk Koc, Hakkı Başar and Ibrahim Yildirim. The 1.63 meter tall athlete competed in flyweight and bantamweight as an adult. He studied sport and became a university teacher after finishing his wrestling career. He is also the 2nd chairman of the Turkish Wrestling Association.

At the beginning of his international career as a wrestler, Ercan Yıldız started in 1994 at the European Junior Championships (Espoirs) in Istanbul in the flyweight division, where he finished second behind Armen Nasarjan from Armenia . In the same year he was already used at the World Championships for Seniors in Tampere , but retired there early and only finished 27th. The next appearances of Ercan Yıldız at international championships were not very successful. In 1995 he came in 16th place at the European Championships in Besançon and 13th in the World Championships in Prague . He missed the jump to the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and at the 1997 European Championships in Kouvola, Finland, he finished only 15th.

Ercan Yıldız made his big breakthrough at the 1997 World Cup in Wroclaw . He won there in flyweight over Tero Eerik Katajisto from Finland with a tie of 2: 2 by a referee decision, then he won just over Dilshod Aripov from Uzbekistan (3: 2 technical points) and then with 1: 0 tech. Points over Andrij Kalaschnykow from Ukraine , Simeon Milew from Bulgaria and Vahan Juharjan from Armenia . With these five narrow points victories, he became world champion without having fully convinced. On the other hand, with these victories he also proved his ability to make close fights victorious.

At the 1998 European Championships in Minsk Ercan Yıldız lost after winning three fights against Marian Sandu from Romania and thus reached 7th place. He did much worse at the 1998 World Cup in Gävle / Sweden , because he was eliminated there after narrowly 2-1 defeats against Barys Radkewitsch from Belarus and Shawn Sheldon from the United States and ended up in 20th place.

It was not much better for him in 1999 when he had to face the jury against himself at the European Championships in Sofia after defeating Zigmunds Jansons from Latvia in the fight against Marian Sandu with a tie of 3: 3 and only finished 12th. At the 1999 World Cup in Athens he lost his first fight against the North Korean Kang Yong Gyun and was only able to advance to 20th place with a victory over Francesco Costantino from Italy .

In 2000 he qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Sydney . He lost there in flyweight against the Cuban Lazaro Rivas Scull his first fight (0:10 technical points). Then he won over Jotham Pellew from New Zealand (16: 0 technical points), but lost his third fight against Natig Aiwasow from Azerbaijan and only reached 11th place.

At the 2001 European Championships in Istanbul , Ercan Yıldız achieved the second major success of his wrestling career. He was there runner-up European champion , where he had to bow to the Pole Dariusz Jabłoński in the final . Another good place he achieved at the 2002 World Championships in Moscow , where he reached 6th place in bantamweight with two wins.

At the end of his international wrestling career, he took part again in the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004 . In bantamweight he lost to Irakli Chochua from Georgia and won over Svajunas Adomaitis from Lithuania , which he reached 12th place.
