Iwo Serafimow Angelow ( Bulgarian Иво Серафимов Ангелов ; born October 15, 1984 in Pernik ) is a Bulgarian wrestler . He became world champion and European champion in the Greco-Roman style featherweight in 2013 .

Career

Iwo Angelow started as a teenager in 1997 at the wrestling club in Lovech with the wrestling and later moved to the Bulgarian top club Liteks-Slavia in Sofia . He is or was trained by Stojan Dobrew and Bratan Tsenow. It focuses on the Greco-Roman style, is relatively light and therefore wrestles in bantam or featherweight. He starts in the German Bundesliga for TuS Adelhausen .

Iwo Angelow first took part in an international championship in 2000. He finished 4th in the European Junior Championships (Cadets) in Bratislava in the weight class up to 42 kg. As a junior, he did not win medals at international championships. Was different that in the elderly, because here he won in his first start in an international championship in 2005 at the European Championships in Varna bantamweight with wins over Khayal Hasanow from Azerbaijan , Thomas Röthlisberger from Switzerland and Kristijan Friš , Serbia and Loss against Viktor Korabljew from Russia a bronze medal . He won the same medal at the 2009 European Featherweight Championships in Vilnius . Here he won over Krisztian Jäger from Hungary , Håkan Nyblom from Denmark and Fuad Alijew from Azerbaijan and only lost to the Polish Edward Barsegjan . In 2009 he also started at a world championship for the first time. In Herning / Denmark he reached the featherweight after a victory over Jansel Ramirez (Dominican Republic) and a defeat against Omid Haji Noroozi (Iran) only the 17th place.

In 2010 he came in 10th place at the European Championships in Baku after a surprising defeat against Söner Sucu from Romania. He did better at the World Cup this year in Moscow , because he came there after a victory over Jansel Ramirez, a defeat against Həsən Əliyev (Azerbaijan), victories over Tonimir Sokol from Croatia and Ruslan Tümönbajew (Kyrgyzstan) and a defeat against the Kazakhs Almat Kebispajew on a good 5th place. He won the next medal at the 2011 European Championships in Dortmund. There he reached the final with victories over Mustafa Saglam (Turkey), Albert Baghumjan Agharzarjan (Spain), Erik Weiß (Germany) and Istvan Kozak (Hungary), in which he was defeated by Rewas Laschchi from Georgia. He also won a medal at the 2011 World Cup in Istanbul. He lost his first fight against Almat Kebispajew there, but then secured a bronze medal with victories over Ruslan Tümönbajew, Carl Anders Ekström, Denmark and Luis Ignacio Liendo, Venezuela. With this medal, he secured a place at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

In 2012 Iwo Angelow won a silver medal at the European Championships again in Belgrade with victories over Eusebiu Diaconu from Romania, Aslan Abdullina (Russia), Irakli Chochua (Georgia) and Kamran Mammadow (Azerbaijan) and a defeat in the final against the Slovakian Istvan Levai . At the Olympic Games, despite good fights, he could not fulfill his dream of a medal. There he came to a victory over Ellis Coleman (USA), then lost to Omid Noroozi, won over Sheng Jiang (China) and lost in his second consolation round match against his feared opponent Almat Kebispajew and thus reached 7th place.

In March 2013 he was finally able to win his first title at an international championship. He became European champion in Tbilisi with victories over Lorenzo Gentile (Italy), Kamran Mammadow, Maksim Kacharski (Belarus) and Iwan Kujlakow (Russia). He added an even bigger success to this success in September 2013, because he was in Budapest with victories over the Colombian Juan Carlos Lopez Asprilla, Kristijan Friis (Serbia), Erward Barsegjan (Poland), Woo Seung-jae (South Korea) and Iwan Kujlakow too Featherweight world champion. In his victories over the almost equal opponents Edward Barsegjan, Woo Seung-jae and Iwan Kujlakow, he drew on his enormous experience and his strong will to win.

In the following years he was unable to fully build on these successes. After a longer injury break, he finished 13th in the 2014 World Championships in Tashkent in the weight class up to 59 kg, and 8th in the same weight class at the 2015 World Championships in Las Vegas.

In April and May 2016, respectively, he clearly missed qualifying for the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro at two qualifying tournaments in Ulaan-Baatar and Istanbul with a 5th and a 16th place.

In 2017 Iwo Angelow managed to win a medal again at the European Championships in Novi Sad. In the weight class up to 59 kg he fought his way there with victories over Hammet Rustem from Turkey, Erik Toba, Hungary and Mingijan Semjonow , Russia up to the final, in which he lost to Kristijan Friis from Serbia.

In 2018 he was at the start again at the World Championships in Budapest. But there he lost his first fight against Haitham Mahmoud Ahmed Fahmy Mahmoud from Egypt. Since this did not reach the final, he was eliminated and only came in 21st place.
