Eusebiu Diaconu (born March 16, 1981 in Bacau , Bacau County ) is a Romanian wrestler . He was the 2007 European Champion in the Greco-Roman style featherweight.

Career

Eusebiu Diaconu started wrestling at the "Municipal" Bacau sports club in his hometown of Bacau . He was or is trained by Gheorghe Mocanu and Ion Butucaru and prefers the Greco-Roman style. "Sebi", as his nickname is, normally weighs over 65 kg at a height of 1.69 meters, but trains for the international championships in featherweight (weight class up to 60 kg body weight). He is a member of the police. He has always resisted poaching attempts by the "Dynamo" Bucharest sports club and the Greek Wrestling Association. In 2003 he was named an Honored Master of Sport and in 2006 he was even made an honorary citizen of Bacau.

Eusebiu Diaconu is also well known in the German wrestling circles because he has been wrestling in the German Bundesliga for VfK Schifferstadt and 1. Luckenwalder SC since 2005 .

The international career of Eusebiu Diaconu began in 1999. In that year he won a bronze medal at the European Junior Championships (Juniors) in Sofia in flyweight . This medal was followed in 2000 and 2001 by winning three further medals at international junior championships. He was in 2000 in Nantes and 2001 in Tashkent in the bantam and featherweight each junior vice world champion.

After switching to the senior class, he first had to pay the tuition at the next championships. At the 2001 World Cup in Patras , he finished in featherweight z. B. after defeats against Juri Kohl from Germany and Akaki Chachua from Georgia only the 27th place. In the following years he fought his way forward and won his first senior medal at the 2003 World Championship in Créteil in the featherweight division with the bronze medal. In the decisive battle for this medal, he defeated the American James Gruenwald .

In 2004 he also qualified for participation in the Olympic Games in Athens . He came there to victories over Hugo Passos da Silva from Portugal and James Gruenwald, but lost in the quarter-finals to Jung Ji-hyun from South Korea , which he finished in 7th place.

In 2005 he was in Varna with victories over Alexei Schewzow from Russia , Hugo Passos da Silva, Iwan Alexandrow , Bulgaria a . Juri Kohl u. a final defeat against Vitali Rəhimov from Azerbaijan Vice-European Champion. And also at the World Championships this year in Budapest, he did very well, because he won the bronze medal in the decisive fight against Vahan Juharjan from Armenia .

Surprisingly, he suffered a setback at the 2006 European Championships in Moscow , because he lost there in his first fight against Petr Svehla from the Czech Republic and ended up in 17th place. At the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou / China he achieved a good 5th place with three wins and two defeats.

Eusebiu Diaconu achieved the greatest success of his career at the 2007 European Championships in Sofia . He was there in featherweight with victories over Hugo Passos da Silva, Jarkko Ala-Huikku , Finland , Tomasz Swierk , Poland , Emil Milew , Bulgaria and Stig Andre Berge , Norway , the new European champion . He also performed extremely well at the 2007 World Cup in Baku . He was defeated there in the semifinals against Dawit Bedinadze from Georgia , but won another bronze medal with a victory over Jarkko Ala-Huikku.

With this medal he had won the right to start at the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . There he won featherweight against Ashraf Melegy El Garably, Egypt , but then lost to Vitali Rəhimov with 1: 2 rounds, with 6: 5 even more technical points than Rahimow. In the consolation round he then had to accept another narrow point defeat from the Chinese Sheng Jiang (1: 2 rounds, 5: 8 technical points), which meant that he was eliminated and finished in 8th place. In the Romanian wrestling camp, however, it was of the opinion that Eusebiu Diaconu had been disadvantaged by the judges in this fight. Later Rəhimov was disqualified for doping and Diaconu was ranked seventh.

In 2009 he won another medal at the European featherweight championships in Vilnius with 3rd place. He lost there against the Olympic champion Islambek Albijew from Russia and won the battle for the bronze medal over Davor Štefanek from Serbia .
