Akaki Chachua

Akaki Tschatschua (born September 16, 1969 in Samtredia , Soviet Union ) is a Georgian wrestler . He won a bronze medal in the Greco-Roman style featherweight at the 2000 Olympics .

Career

Akaki Chachua began wrestling as a teenager in 1980. He concentrated on the Greco-Roman style. After joining the armed forces, he became a member of the Tbilisi Army Sports Club . He was trained mainly by Otar Tatishvili and Rewas Gwendsadze. With a height of 1.64 meters, he always wrestled in featherweight.

He was already 24 years old when he played his first international championship, that was the 1993 European championship in Istanbul. He came in 6th place in featherweight. After that it was only used again at the 1997 European Championships in Kouvola / Finland. He was in great shape there. He lost his first fight against Şeref Eroğlu , Turkey, but afterwards he secured an EM bronze medal with victories over Sevkat Karapinar, Germany, Ari Härkänen , Finland, Alexander Schischko, Belarus, Michael Beilin , Israel and Jerzy Szeibinger, Poland. He was then used at the 1997 World Cup in Wrocław. There he won over Thierry Bastien, France and Michael Beilin, lost to the 1996 Olympic champion Włodzimierz Zawadzki from Poland, won over Bachodir Kurbanow from Uzbekistan and lost to Mchitar Manukjan , Kazakhstan. With these results he came in 7th place.

He achieved similar results at the 1998 European Championships in Minsk, where he came in 7th place, and at the 1998 World Championships in Gaevle / Sweden. At both championships he was defeated by Nikolai Monow , Russia, and thus prevented from getting better placements. At the European Championships in Sofia in 1999, Akaki Chachua then won the next medal. He defeated Warteres Samurgaschew , Russia, Robert Mazouch, Czech Republic, Eduard Aplewitsch, Belarus and Christos Gikas, Greece and only lost in the final battle against Wlodzimierz Zawadzki. At this year's World Cup in Athens he had to accept a disappointment, because he lost his fights there against Bachodir Kurbanow and Leonhard Ionel Frincu, Romania, and ended up in 28th place.

In 2000 Akakai Chachua managed to qualify in several tournaments for the Olympic Games in Sydney. In Sydney he then started in excellent form. He won there over Yi Shanjun, China, Vaghinak Galstjan, Armenia and Bachodir Kurbanow, then he lost to Warteres Samurgaschew, against whom he had won the previous year just by points (4: 7) and finally secured himself with a point victory over Beat Motzer , Switzerland, an Olympic bronze medal.

After this success, he continued to compete in many international championships, although he was already over 30 years old. But he did not get into the medal ranks. The best result he still achieved was a good 5th place at the world championship in Moscow in 2002. He defeated Håkan Nyblom from Denmark, Lin Chien-Liang, Taiwan and Eusebiu Diaconu , Romania and then lost after one Defeat against Wlodzimierz Zawadzki. In 2004 he took part in the Olympic Games for the second time. In Athens he first won over Paolo Fucile, Italy and then lost to Nurlan Koischaiganow, Kazakhstan, which brought him to 9th place.

After the 2004 Olympic Games, he ended his international wrestling career. From 2006 to 2010 he wrestled with the German clubs AV Sulgen and KSV Unterelchingen . He then became a coach in the Georgian Wrestling Association.
