Günther Sidl (born March 19, 1975 in St. Pölten ) is an Austrian politician ( SPÖ ). Sidl was a member of the Lower Austrian state parliament from 2013 to June 2019 and has been a member of the European Parliament since July 2, 2019 . In the civilian profession he was most recently director of the Vienna Urania from 2013 to 2019.

education and profession

Sidl attended elementary school in Petzenkirchen between 1981 and 1985 , then switched to the Wieselburg high school and finally passed the Matura in 1996 . He studied political science, journalism and communication science. After completing his master's degree, he began studying political science for a doctorate. He concluded this with a thesis on the transformation of Austrian social democracy. In addition to his studies, Sidl worked, among other things, as the federal coordinator of the anti-fascism campaign of the Socialist Youth Austria, after which he worked from 1998 to 2002 in the action office of the SPÖ federal office. He then acted as an assistant to the management at the sports umbrella association ASKÖ Vienna and then worked in the election office ofHeinz Fischer in the 2004 presidential election and the 2004 SPÖ EU election campaign. After Sidl was head of public relations (PR and marketing) at the Vienna Urania and the Vienna Planetarium from September 2004 to February 2007, he was from March 2007 to December 2008 Karin Scheele worked as office manager of the SPÖ delegation leader in the European Parliament . He also worked from January 2009 to June 2010 as an employee of State Councilor Scheele and in 2010 he was again active in the national campaign office for Heinz Fischer during the election campaign. After Sidl had worked as a consultant at Public Interest Consultants GmbH, he switched to the club of social democratic representatives in the Lower Austrian state parliament. From 2013 to 2019 he was director of Urania in Vienna.

Politics and functions

Sidl was deputy district party chairman of the SPÖ district organization Melk from 2000 to 2011. In 2011 he was executive chairman and in April 2012 he took over the function of district chairman. From 2009 to 2018 he was a councilor in the market town of Petzenkirchen. Sidl is state chairman of the Federation of Social Democratic Academics, Artists and Intellectuals of Lower Austria as well

Deputy Federal Chairman of the BSA. In addition, he sits on the state and federal executive boards of the Federation of Social Democratic Freedom Fighters, Victims of Fascism and Active Anti-Fascists.

In the European elections in Austria in 2019 , he ran for the SPÖ in third place on the list . With the constituent session of the 9th European Parliament on July 2, 2019, he moved into the European Parliament as a member. Josef Wiesinger took over his state parliament mandate on June 26, 2019 . 

In the European Parliament, Günther Sidl is a member of the Committee on Environment, Health and Food Safety and a deputy member of the Committee on Industry, Research and Energy. He is a member of the delegation for parliamentary cooperation between EU-Kazakhstan, EU-Kyrgyzstan, EU-Uzbekistan and EU-Tajikistan as well as for relations with Turkmenistan and Mongolia. He is also a substitute member of the delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean and a substitute member of the delegation for parliamentary cooperation between the EU and Russia.
