World Wrestling Championships 2002

The wrestling world championships in 2002 took place separately according to style and gender at different locations. The wrestlers were divided into seven weight classes for the first time at world championships .

Greco-Roman

The Greco-Roman style competitions took place in Moscow from September 20-22, 2002 . The best German wrestler was Konstantin Schneider with a seventh place in the weight class –74 kg. The Germans Mirko Englich in eighth place in the –96 kg weight class and Nico Schmidt with 10th place in the –130 kg weight class also made it into the top ten.

Freestyle

The free style competitions took place from September 5th to 7th, 2002 in Tehran . The best Germans were Engin Ürün in fourth in the -66 kg weight class, Daniel Wilde in the -60 kg weight class and Markus Hamann in seventh in the -120 kg weight class, Andre Backhaus in 8th place in the -84 kg weight class and Alexander Leipold with them 10th place in the weight class –74 kg. For Switzerland, Rolf Scherrer placed eighth in the –96 kg weight class and Robert Eggertswyler placed 10th in the –84 kg weight class among the top ten.

Women

The women's competitions took place from November 2nd to 3rd, 2002 in Chalkida . In addition to the title winner Brigitte Wagner , the Germans Christina Örtli came fifth in the -59 kg weight class, Annika Örtli came 6th in the -67 kg weight class, Stéphanie Groß came seventh in the -63 kg weight class and Anita Schätzle came 10th in the weight class -72 kg in the top ten. Nikola Hartmann-Dünser was the most successful Austrian with 6th place in the -63 kg weight class. The best Swiss woman was Nadine Tokar in ninth place in the -55 kg weight class.
