Kristie Marano
Kristie Marano (born January 24, 1979 in Albany , New York ) is an American wrestler and two-time world champion .
Career
Kristie Marano comes from a family of wrestlers. Her father Conrad Stenglein and her brothers Matt and Joshua were also wrestlers. She began wrestling in 1995 at Colonie Central High School in Albany, after having started judo at the age of 5 and practicing this sport until she was 16. After high school, she attended Hudson Valley Community College and Piles Peak Community College. She studied physics.
When it comes to wrestling, her most important coaches were Andi Momm, Archie Randall, Terry Steiner and Link Davis. She also became a member of the New York Athletic Club and trained for a long time in the training center of the US Wrestling Association in Colorado Springs . At the beginning of her career she started under her maiden name Kristie Stenglein. In 1999 she married Chad Marano and took the family name Marano. It was under this name that she had her greatest sporting successes for almost ten years. Before that, in 1998, she had given birth to her first daughter, Kayla. She noticed her pregnancy so late that she was still fully training until a few weeks before the birth and also took part in competitions. Even after the birth, she was back on the wrestling mat just 10 days later. Kristie Marano later separated from Chad Marano and married Link Davis. That year she gave birth to her second daughter, Lilly. She started under the name Kristie Davis in 2009.
As already mentioned, when Kristie Marano was still called Kristie Stenglein, she first practiced judo. She was so successful that she was able to take part in the 1996 US Olympic Trials for the 1996 Summer Olympics in Atlanta . However, she did not qualify. With this sporting background, she became US vice-champion in the women in 1996 and also started this year at the World Championships in Sofia in the weight class up to 75 kg and was there immediately (as Kristie Stenglein) behind the Chinese Liu Dong Feng and before Sha Ling-Li from Taiwan , Anna Schamowa from Russia and Monika Kowalski from Poland Vice World Champion.
1997 Kristie Marano was in San Juan (Puerto Rico) winner of the Pan American Championships, again in the weight class up to 75 kg. In the World Cup of Women in Clermont-Ferrand , she won in the weight category up to 75 kg after beating Vanessa Civit from France , Saida Riabi from Tunisia and Anna Schamowa after a defeat in the final against Kyoko Hamaguchi of Japan again the silver medal . In 1998 she took part in a Junior World Championship for the first time in Fredrikstad / Norway, where she won the title ahead of May Bente Eriksen from Norway and Edyta Witkowska from Poland . In the same year she was then vice-world champion for women in the weight class up to 75 kg in Poznań for the third time in a row. On the way to this she defeated Vera Bazantowa from the Czech Republic and Nina Englich from Germany . Only in the final battle she lost again to Kyoko Hamaguchi. Kristie Marano remained loyal to second place at the 1999 World Cup in Swedish soil. There she also came to this place after victories over May Bente Eriksen, Jelena Jirnowa from Russia, Jana Panowa from Kyrgyzstan and Elvira Barriga from Austria and a defeat in the final against Kyoko Hamaguchi.
In 2000 Kristie Marano switched to the weight class up to 68 kg. The change to this weight class brought her immediate success, because this year she became the first women's world champion in this weight class at the World Championships in Sofia after victories over Anna Schamowa, Tomeo Miyamoto from Japan, Xiomara Guevara from Venezuela and Lise Legrand from France.
In the following years, Kristie Marano's successes were no longer easy to achieve. Women's wrestling had become more and more established and the competition grew bigger and bigger. 2001 she was in Santo Domingo again Pan American champion in the weight class up to 68 kg, but could not qualify in the United States for participation in the world championship of that year. In 2002 she was back at the World Championships in Chalkida / Greece and came there after victories over Stanka Slatewa from Bulgaria a . Shannon Samler from Canada , a loss to Kateryna Burmistrowa from Ukraine and a victory over Ewelina Pruszko from Poland in 3rd place, which meant winning a bronze medal .
In 2003 Kristie Marano became the second time world champion in New York . In the weight class up to 67 kg she beat Jodeen Marie MacGregor from New Zealand , Martina Zyklova from the Czech Republic, Norie Saito from Japan, Shannon Samler and Ewelina Pruszko one after the other . She won her eighth World Championship medal, including the 1998 Junior World Championship medal. In 2004, women's wrestling was on the program for the first time in four weight classes at the Olympic Games in Athens . The weight class up to 67 kg, in which Kristie Marano started, was not there. She trained therefore at the USA championship in the weight class up to 63 kg and won the championship here. Apparently, this training had cost her so much strength that she decided to start in the US Olympic Trials in the weight class up to 72 kg. In this weight class, however, she lost in the two decisive fights against Toccara Montgomery and thus missed participation in Athens.
In the following years it started in the weight class up to 72 kg. At the next World Cup took again only in 2006 in part and thereby came to Guangzhou / China after a victory over Darya Karpenko , Kazakhstan, losing to Kyoko Hamaguchi and victories over Otschirbatyn Nasanburmaa , Mongolia , Svetlana Saenko from Ukraine and Ohenewa Akuffo of Canada to win their next medal, a bronze one. In 2007 she won the Pan American Games for the first time. In Rio de Janeiro she stayed ahead of Ohenewa Akuffo and Rosangela Conceicao from Brazil . Kristie Marano won her last World Championship medal, her tenth, at the 2007 World Championship in Baku . There she defeated Agnieszka Wieszczek from Poland, Maider Unda Gonzales de Audicana from Spain and Güzäl Mänürowa from Russia, before losing to Stanka Slatewa in the final.
In 2008, Kristie Marano came in at the US championship behind Ali Bernard , Catherine Downing and Iris Smith only 4th place and also failed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing in the Olympic trials .
After a break in 2009, which came about due to the circumstances described above (birth of her second child), Kristie Marano, now as Kristie Davis, made a comeback. She managed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in Moscow . In Moscow, however, she failed in the first round in the weight category up to 67 kg to Alla Cherkassova from Ukraine. Therefore she only finished 12th there. In 2011 she even trained again in the weight class up to 63 kg and was American champion in Rionegro Pan ahead of Justine Bouchard from Canada and Sandra Roa from Colombia .
It can be assumed that Kristie Davis will try in 2012 to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games.
