Martine Dugrenier, 2012

Martine Dugrenier (born June 12, 1979 in Montreal , Québec ) is a Canadian wrestler . From 2008 to 2010 she was world champion in the weight class up to 67 kg three times in a row .

Career

Martine Dugrenier began wrestling at Vanier College in Montreal in 1997 at the age of 18. She also studied at Concordia University in Montreal and became a member of the Concordia University Wrestling Club . She is also a member of the Montreal Wrestling Club . Your trainers were or are Rob Moore and Victor Zilberman. She is a physics teacher and lives in Laval , Quebec.

In 2001 she finished 5th in the Canadian women's championship in the weight category up to 68 kg, in which Christine Nordhagen was the winner. In November 2001 she won in the weight class up to 77 kg at a well-attended invitation tournament at Concordia University. In 2002 she was then for the first time Canadian student champion and finished in the Canadian championship in the weight class up to 72 kg behind Pam Wilson , but in front of Ohenewa Akuffo in 2nd place. She was Canadian runner-up in the weight class up to 67 kg in 2003. Martine Dugrenier was Canadian champion for the first time in 2004. After that, she won another seven Canadian championship titles in a row from 2005 to 2011, always in the weight class up to 67 kg.

In 2004 she became university (student) world champion in the weight class up to 67 kg in Łódź, in which she always competed, with the exception of the 2008 Olympic Games, ahead of Monika Maj from Poland and Waleria Slatowa from Ukraine . That was her first big success on the international wrestling mat. These successes continued over the next few years. In 2005 she won the Commonwealth Championships in Stellenbosch / South Africa and was runner-up at the World Championships in Budapest with three victories. In the final she lost to Meng Lili from China with 0: 2 rounds and 2: 5 technique points.

In 2006 she came in 3rd place at the University World Championships in Ulaanbaatar behind Gelegdschamtsyn Narantschimeg from Mongolia and Mami Shinkai from Japan. At the 2006 World Championships in Guangzhou / China she came back to 2nd place. In the final, another Chinese woman, Jing Ruixue , had to admit defeat by just a few points (0: 2 rounds, 1: 4 points). In 2007 she was again the winner of the Pan American Championships in San Salvador ahead of Elena Piroschkowa from the United States and at the 2007 World Championships in Baku she was again in the final and lost to a Chinese woman, Jung Rui Xue, on points for the third time (0 : 2 rounds, 1: 3 points).

In 2008, women's competitions were on the program in four weight classes at the Olympic Games in Beijing . Your traditional weight class up to 67 kg was not included. So she had to decide whether she wanted to start in the weight class up to 63 kg or in the weight class up to 72 kg, with the appropriate qualifications. She decided to train off, which was not easy for her with a height of 1.65 meters and a "normal weight" of around 70 kg. In Beijing she started in the weight class up to 63 kg after she had prevailed in the Canadian Olympic Trials. She won in Beijing in her first fight safely over Marianna Sastin from Hungary and in her second fight just 2: 1 rounds, in a technical. Score of 4: 4 over the Chinese Xu Haiyan . Then she lost just as tightly (1: 2 rounds, 2: 2 points) against the multiple Japanese world champion Kaori Icho . In this fight, she first won one round with 1-0 points, then the Japanese one with 1-0 points and in the third round Martine Dugrenier only lost the fight because the Japanese was just ahead of Dugrenier in a 1-0 point lead At the end of the round, the 1: 1 point equalization succeeded and through this last evaluation she also won the round and thus the fight. Unfortunately for her, Martine Dugrnier lost the fight for the Olympic bronze medal against the American Randi Miller , weakened by the training, whereby the result of the fight with 1: 2 rounds and 3: 3 technical points was just as tight as in the Fight against Kaori Icho.

In 2008 there were also world championships in Tokyo . Martine Dugrenier started again in the weight class up to 67 kg and won the world title for the first time with four victories, where she had to defeat four first-class opponents with Alexandra Boginskaja from Kazakhstan , Suman Kundu from India , Kateryna Burmistrowa from Ukraine and Mami Shinkai.

In 2009 she defended her title win at the World Championships in Herning / Denmark and became world champion again. She defeated Badrachyn Odontschimeg from Mongolia, Sumrud Gurbanhadschijewa from Azerbaijan , Kateryna Burmistrowa, Yoshiko Inoue from Japan and Julija Bartnowskaja from Russia . In 2010 she won her third consecutive world title at the World Championships in Moscow . She defeated Maja Gunvor Erlandsen from Norway , Mami Shinkai, Ifeoma Iheanacho from Nigeria and Jelena Schalygina from Russia.

Martine Dugrenier has been three times world champion and three times vice world champion in the weight class up to 67 kg. But what is still missing is an Olympic medal. She will therefore certainly continue her career until the 2012 Olympic Games in London .

In 2011 she competed at the World Championships in Istanbul . But this time she only came in 7th place in her traditional weight class because she lost to the Chinese Shelok Dolma after a victory over Tatiana Sakharova from Kazakhstan and also suffered a defeat in her first consolation round match against Adeline Gray from the United States.

In 2012, she trained in the Olympic weight class up to 63 kg and won the Olympic Games in London with a victory over Katherine Vidiaux Lopez from Cuba at a tournament in Kissimmee Orlando / USA . In London, she lost in her first fight against the multiple world champion in this weight class Kaori Icho from Japan. Since this was Olympic champion, Martine Dugrenier was able to continue in the consolation round. There she first defeated the European Champion 2012 Henna Johansson from Sweden, but lost the decisive fight for an Olympic bronze medal against Sorondsonboldyn Battsetseg from Mongolia and therefore missed this medal with a 5th place.

For her services to the sport of wrestling , she was inducted into the FILA International Wrestling Hall of Fame in August 2016 .
