Career
Catherine Downing, known only as Katie Downing in wrestling circles , began judo as a child . She began wrestling during her time at Pendleton High School in 1994 . Dave Cloud, Doug Reese and Terry Steiner have been her main coaches throughout her career. After high school, she attended the University of Minnesota Morris at Saint Paul . She also became a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club and trained at the training center of the US Wrestling Association in Colorado Springs . In 2002 she graduated as a social scientist.
She achieved her first major sporting successes in 1999. She became US university champion in the weight class up to 68 kg that year and was vice world champion in the same weight class in Bucharest in the same year . In 2001 she finished 3rd in the US championship in the weight class up to 68 kg behind Toccara Montgomery and Kristie Marano . She then became US champion in 2003 before Kaci Lyle and Stephany Lee , in 2006 before Randi Miller and Heather Martin and in 2007 before Elena Piroschkowa and Stefanie Shaw (each in the weight class up to 67 kg).
In the following years she achieved victories or excellent placements in many important international tournaments. One of her greatest successes in these years was her victory at the World Cup in Levallois , France , where she won the world-class athletes Yang Yanli from the People's Republic of China , Shannon Samler from Canada , Anna Schamowa from Russia and Lise Goliot in the weight class up to 68 kg . Legrand from France left behind. In 2004, however, she failed in the US Olympic Trials, which she had to contest in the weight class up to 72 kg because her traditional weight class up to 67 kg is not included in the Olympic program, at Toccara Montgomery. In 2005 she qualified for the first time to take part in the World Cup . This took place in Budapest and Katie Downing won the bronze medal there after victories over Manuela Barzu from Romania , Stawrula Zygouri from Greece , a defeat against Martine Dugrenier from Canada and further victories over Eri Sakamoto from Japan and Ashley McManus from Great Britain .
In 2006 she qualified again for participation in the World Championships in Guangzhou / China. There she suffered a completely surprising defeat against the Dutch woman Masira Admiraal in the first round in the weight class up to 67 kg. She was eliminated and only finished 14th. At the 2007 World Championships in Baku , for which she qualified in the World Championship trials with two victories over Elena Piroschkowa , she did far better again. Because she won there with victories over Maria Müller from Germany a . Hanna Beljajewa from Belarus , a defeat against Jing Ruixue from China and a victory over Yoshiko Inoue from Japan won a bronze medal again.
In the Olympic year 2008 Katie Downing started again in the Olympic weight class up to 72 kg. After a 2nd place in the US Championship, she took part in the Olympic Trials, but lost to Ali Bernard and could therefore not qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing . She then ended her wrestling career.
