Stephany Lee (born October 8, 1984 in Honolulu , Hawaii ) is an American wrestler . She is a three-time Pan American champion.

Career

Stephany Lee began judo in Honolulu at the age of seven . During her time at Attenda Moanalua High School in Honolulu, she came into contact with wrestling and began with coach Joel Kawachi with this sport. After high school, she went to Missouri and attended college in the Missouri Valley. Your trainer there was Carl Murphree. After her first major successes, she moved to Colorado Springs and trained there in the training center of the US Wrestling Association under national coach Terry Steiner. She also became a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club . She studied education. At the beginning of her career she wrestled in the weight class up to 67 kg body weight, but soon switched to the highest weight class in women's wrestling, which has its weight limit of 72 kg body weight. Since 2004 she has only started in this weight class.

In 2003 she came in the US championship (weight class up to 67 kg KG) behind Katie Downing and Kacy Lyle on 3rd place. In 2004 she took second place in this championship in the weight class up to 72 kg, behind Toccara Montgomery , but ahead of Catherine Downing and Iris Smith . She was therefore able to take part in the US Olympic elimination for the Olympic Games in Athens, but failed there because of Kristie Marano . In May 2004, however, she celebrated her first major international success, because she was Pan American champion in Guatemala City ahead of Rainiel Guerra from Venezuela and Rosangela Conceicao from Brazil . Another success followed in June 2004, as she became the world champion of the Universities in Lodz , relegating Agniezka Wieszczek from Poland , Maria Luiza Vryoni from Greece and Ayako Murashima from Japan to the places.

In 2005, Stephany Lee could not take part in the USA championships because of an injury. Recovered, she won the Sunkist Kids International Open in Tempe (Arizona) in October 2005 in the weight category up to 72 kg in front of such strong wrestlers as Ohenewa Akuffo from Canada and Ali Bernard from the United States. In 2006 she came back in second place behind Kristie Marano at the USA Championship , but stayed ahead of Ali Bernard. In the World Championship elimination (Trials) 2006 she lost the decisive fights against Kristie Marano again. In 2006 she was again Pan American champion in Rio de Janeiro ahead of Rosangela Conceicao, Rainiel Guerra and Leah Callahan from Canada.

In 2007 Stephany Lee reached 3rd place in the USA championship behind Kristie Marano and Iris Smith and in the 2007 World Championship trials she was beaten again by Kristie Marano. In 2008 and 2009 she could not start at the USA championships due to an injury. However, she had some international successes in these years. In February 2008 she became Pan American Champion again in Colorado Springs ahead of Ohenewa Akuffo and Rosangela Conceicao, and in July 2008 she became University World Champion for the second time, relegating Jekaterina Bukina from Russia and Vanessa Wilson from Canada to places 2 and 3. Finally she managed to prevail in October 2008 at the World Championships against Iris Smith and thus to fight for the right to start at the World Championships in Tokyo . In Tokyo, however, she lost in the first round against the multiple world champion Kyoko Hamaguchi from Japan. However, since this did not reach the final, she did not make it into the consolation round and was eliminated early and ultimately took 11th place.

Her greatest success in 2009 was winning the World Cup in Taiyuan , China , where she won ahead of Wang Jiao from China , Darja Nasarowa from Russia and Ohenewa Akuffo.

In 2010, Stephany Lee became the US champion for the first time, ahead of Iris Smith, the 2005 world champion and Melissa Simmons, and in the World Championship trials she prevailed against Ali Bernard. At this year's World Cup in Moscow , she won a victory over Roxana Camelia Jancolovici from Romania . After a somewhat surprising defeat against Jenny Fransson from Sweden , she was eliminated after the 2nd round and came in 8th place.

In June 2012, it was announced that a doping sample from Lee tested positive for marijuana in April 2012 . She was then banned from the American anti-doping agency USADA for one year and therefore missed the 2012 Summer Olympics in London . She had tested positive for marijuana before in 2009.
