Ohenewa Akuffo (born February 15, 1979 in North York , Toronto ) is a Canadian wrestler . In 2010 she became vice world champion in the weight class up to 72 kg.
Career
Ohenewa Akuffo is the daughter of Ghanaian immigrants to Canada . When she was three years old, her parents went back to Ghana with her, but after another five years they finally emigrated to Canada. They settled in Brampton, Ontario with their daughter Ohenewa . Ohenewa Akuffo began wrestling as a teenager in high school, Ascension Secondary School, Mississauga, Ontario in 1993 and became a member of the St. Augustin Secondary School Wrestling Club . She later also became a member of the Matman Wrestling Club and the Guelph Wrestling Club . Her trainer Dave Mair has looked after her since 1996, and Doug Cox later joined her as a trainer. She holds a Bachelor of Administration Studies (Marketing) degree with a Certificate of Management and Administration from York University and works in child and youth care.
Ohenewa Akuffo achieved her first major sporting success in 1997 when she became Canadian champion in the women in the weight class up to 75 kg. In 1998 and 1999 she was Canadian Junior Champion and 1999 Canadian Student Champion. After becoming Canadian runner-up in 2000, she won her second Canadian women's championship title in 2001, followed by six more Canadian championship titles by 2011. She always fought in the heaviest weight class, which went up to 75 kg until 2001 and up to 72 kg since 2002.
The start of her international career also began in 1997, because after winning the Canadian championship title, she was also used at the 1997 World Cup in Clermont-Ferrand . However, she still had to learn the hard way and came in 11th after losing two fights. The next start at one of the major international championships took place in 2001. She took part in the world championship in Sofia that year and finished 10th after defeats against Nina Englich from Germany and Sumrud Gurbanhadschijewa from Russia .
In 2002 Ohenewa Akuffo finished both at the Pan American Championship in Guatemala City and at the Pan American Games in Santo Domingo , both times behind the American Toccara Montgomery . At the 2003 in New York she reached 13th place after a loss to the Chinese Wang Xu and a victory over Aline Silva Ferreira from Brazil . At the end of 2003, Ohenewa Akuffo failed in the Canadian Olympic elimination for the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens to Christine Nordhagen , the multiple world champion. She achieved a very good result at the 2004 World Cup in Tokyo , where she came second behind Kyoko Hamaguchi from Japan, ahead of Ma Bailing from China and Alena Starodubzewa from Russia.
She achieved a remarkable success at the Universities World Cup in Izmir in 2005 , because she won the title there and left such famous wrestlers as Kateryna Burmistrowa from Ukraine , Ayako Murashima from Japan and Agnieszka Wieszczek from Poland behind. At the World Championships in Budapest she won a victory over Maria Orlowa from Uzbekistan . After a defeat in the next fight against Anita Schätzle from Germany, she was eliminated and came in 7th place. She achieved a good result at the 2006 World Cup in Guangzhou . After two wins, she lost there in the semifinals against Kyoko Hamaguchi, but then had to fight for a medal for the first time at a world championship. However, she lost this fight against the American Kristie Davis and came in 5th place.
At the 2007 World Cup in Baku, Ohenewa Akuffo lost her first fight against Jenny Fransson from Sweden . Since this did not reach the final battle, she was eliminated and only ended up in 22nd place. In 2008 she managed to qualify for the Olympic Games in Beijing . There she lost to the multiple world champion Stanka Slatewa from Bulgaria and, surprisingly, also to the Spaniard Maider Unda Gonzales de Audicana and only came in 10th place. At the World Championships in Tokyo , which will take place in Beijing after the Olympic Games , she won a bronze medal in the World Cup with victories over Swetlana Sajenko from Ukraine, Elena Diana Mudrag from Romania and Alena Starodubzewa , Russia, and a loss against Stanka Slatewa .
At the 2009 World Championships in Herning / Denmark , Ohenewa Akuffo won over Maria Luiza Vryoni from Greece , but then lost again to Stanka Slatewa (0: 2 rounds, 1: 2 technical points) and then had to retire, placing her in 10th place reached. She had her greatest sense of achievement at the 2010 World Cup in Moscow , where she advanced to the final with victories over Maider Unda Gonzales de Audicana, Li Dan from China and Kyoko Hamaguchi, in which she was again defeated by Stanka Slatewa (0: 2 Rounds, 0: 2 technical points). She became runner-up world champion. In October 2010 she won the Commonwealth Games in Delhi ahead of Laure Ali Annabel from Cameroon and Helen Okus from Ghana .
Encouraged by these recent successes, Ohenewa Akuffo announced that she intended to continue to the 2012 Olympic Games in London . But she was unable to achieve this goal because she was unable to qualify for the Canadian Olympic team in 2012. A year earlier, she had a remarkable victory at the World Cup in Istanbul. She beat the two-time Olympic third and multiple world champion Kyoko Hamaguchi from Japan on points. In the next round, however, she lost to the American Ali Sue Bernard and was eliminated because Bernard did not reach the finals.
