Career

Stanka Slatewa Christowa started wrestling as a teenager in 1997 in the Kyustendil Sport Club . Later moved to the Levski Sofia sports club . Her first coach was Demir Demirew. Other coaches to whom she owes a lot were or were Valery Raitschew, Ognan Raitschew and Simeon Schterew . She is a squat, only 1.63 meters tall wrestler who impresses with her outstanding technique, above all with her strength and speed. She achieved her great successes in the heaviest weight class in women's wrestling, namely up to 72 kg body weight.

She made her first start at an international championship in 1999. She took 7th place at the European Junior Championships in Budapest in the weight class up to 63 kg. The winner of this championship was Anita Schätzle from Germany . Anita Schätzle was then one of the main competitors of Stanka Slatewa Christowa in the international championships in the following years. Until 2005 Stanka Slatewa Christowa failed again and again because of this wrestler, only from 2006 onwards she was able to defeat it.

Stanka Slatewa Christowa won her first medal at an international championship at the Junior European Championship for the cadet age group (up to the age of 16) in Lodz . Here she was second winner in the weight class up to 65 kg behind Jelena Perepelkina from Russia . She won further junior medals in 2000 with a 2nd place at the European Junior Championships (Cadets) in Bratislava , 1st place at the 2002 European Junior Championships in Tirana in the weight class up to 68 kg and 2nd place at the Junior World Championships 2003 in Istanbul in the weight class up to 72 kg body weight, where she lost in the final to the Chinese Yanfang Li.

In 2001, when she was eighteen, she started at an international women's championship for the first time. At the European Championships in Budapest in the weight category up to 68 kg she still had to pay a lot of money, because she lost her two fights against Lise Legrand from France and Lotta Andersson from Sweden and only finished 11th and last place. At this year's World Championships in Sofia, she lost to Anita Schätzle in the same weight class, but then celebrated her first victory in the women's division in the fight against Norie Saito from Japan . It took 7th place.

In the next few years she achieved better and better placements at the international championships. At the European Championships in 2002, she came in the weight class up to 67 kg after a defeat in the semifinals against Anita Schätzle on the 5th place. At the 2003 European Championships in Riga she came in the weight class up to 72 kg, again after a defeat against Anita Schätzle on the 4th place and took the same place at the 2003 World Championships in New York after a defeat against the multiple Japanese World Champion Kyoko Hamaguchi .

In 2004 Stanka Slatewa Christowa reached the 5th place at the European Championships in Haparanda . At the Olympic Games in Athens , however, she lost in the weight class up to 72 kg, in which she wrestled exclusively from then on, against Kyoko Hamaguchi and against Toccara Montgomery from the United States and only came in 12th place.

In 2005 she won her first medal at an international championship for women with a third place at the European championships in Varna . At the World Championships that year in Budapest she came in 5th place. At both championships she lost to Anita Schätzle.

From 2006 onwards, Stanka Slatewa Christowa started a unique winning streak. Between 2006 and 2011, she won a medal at all thirteen international championships she participated in during those years. She was five times world champion and five times European champion and won a silver medal at the 2008 Olympic Games . As of 2006, she did not lose a fight against Anita Schätzle either . The number of world class female wrestlers she defeated in those years is legion. The best known among these next Anita Schätzle are: Svetlana Saenko , Jelena Perepelkina , Vasilisa Marsaljuk , Kyoko Hamaguchi , Kristie Marano , Guzel Manyurova , Alena Starodubzewa , Ohenewa Akuffo , Ekaterina Bukina , Jenny Fransson , Ali Sue Bernard , Maja Gunvor Erlandsen and Agnieszka Wieszczek - Cordus. In those years she was only defeated by Wang Jiao from China in the final of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing . A defeat that was particularly painful, of course. Then from another Chinese, namely Xiaoqing Qin in the semifinals of the 2009 World Cup in Herning / Denmark and finally by Kateryna Burmistrowa from Ukraine in the semifinals of the 2011 European Championships in Dortmund . She then suffered another defeat at the 2012 European Championships in Belgrade against the young Russian Natalja Vorobjewa . Since this missed the final, Stanka Slatewa Christowa could not continue in the consolation round and only finished 18th. That was the worst place she ever achieved in an international championship.

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London , she managed to win the silver medal again . There she won over Wassilissa Marsaljuk from Belarus, Laure Annabel Ali from Cameroon and Maider Unda Gonzales de Audicana from Spain, but lost again to the Russian Natalja Vorobjewa in the final .

After a somewhat longer break, Stanka Slatewa made a comeback on an international level in April 2014, which also succeeded, because she won at the European Championships in Vantaa / Finland in the new weight class up to 75 kg body weight with victories over Ileana Denisa Mlacovei, Romania, Katerina Burmistrowa and Wassilissa Marsaljuk their sixth European title. At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, she won her first fight against Anshu Tomar from India, but lost her next fight against Ochirbatyn Burmaa just on points. Since this did not reach the final, she was eliminated and only reached 8th place.

She also competed in international tournaments and championships in 2015 and won the "Dan Kolow" & "Nikola Petrow" memorial in Sofia in April 2015. In the final of the weight class up to 75 kg, she won over Yasemin Adar from Turkey. In June 2015 she started at the European Games in Baku and lost there in her first fight against Yasemin Adar. She was eliminated and only finished 12th. After that, she ended her successful career.

In 2006, 2007, 2008 and 2010, Stanka Slatewa Christowa was voted Wrestler of the Year by the FILA .
