Iris Smith
Iris Smith (born October 15, 1979 in Albany , Georgia ) is an American wrestler . In 2005 she was world champion in the weight class up to 72 kg.
Career
Iris Smith grew up in her hometown of Albany, where she began wrestling at the age of 15 in 1994, having previously played basketball . She was discovered for wrestling by Anthony White, who also became her first coach. She joined the US Army at the age of 20 and is stationed in Fort Carson, Colorado . In the US Army, she is promoted through a special program for world-class athletes. She also became a member of the Sunkist Kids Wrestling Club and trained at the US Wrestling Association's training center in Colorado Springs . Your trainer there is Shon Lewis. She is 1.65 meters tall and has always competed in the highest weight class of women wrestling throughout her entire career (up to 2001 up to 75 kg and since 2002 up to 72 kg). In 2000, she surprised her American competition and was already the title holder of the active athletes in the weight class up to 75 kg when she took part in a US championship for the first time. She was then used by the US Wrestling Association at the Pan American Championships in Cali and immediately won her first international championship title in front of Mildred Hernandez Perez from Venezuela . Shortly afterwards she was sent to the start at the World Championships in Sofia and finished there as a good 7th place as a newcomer. The winner in her weight class was Christine Nordhagen from Canada . In 2001 Iris Smith was again American champion and again won the competition in the weight class up to 75 kg at the Pan American Championships in Santo Domingo , ahead of Yasmily Ramos from Venezuela and Luisa Marcela Carias from El Salvador . At the 2001 World Cup she was unable to participate because she was doing her basic training with the US Army during this time, from which she was not released.
In 2002 she won her third US championship in a row. At this year's Pan-American Championship in Maracaibo , however, she was unable to repeat her victories from the two previous years and only came third behind Ohenewa Akuffo from Canada and Yasmily Ramos. In the US elimination ( Trials ) for the World Championships in 2002 she was beaten by Toccara Montgomery , who had moved up from the weight class up to 67 kg , and could therefore not start at the World Championships. In 2003 and 2004 she could not quite build on her achievements from 2000 to 2002. In 2003 she took 3rd place in the US championship in the weight category up to 72 kg behind Toccara Montgomery and Samantha Lang, and in 2004 she only achieved 4th place in the same championship behind Toccara Montgomery, Stephany Lee and Catherine Downing . Space. At the 2004 Olympic Trials, she failed in advance against Stephany Lee. In March 2004, however, she had a great international success when she won in the "Lion's Den", the Ivan Yarigin Memorial in Krasnoyarsk , ahead of the two top Russian wrestlers Svetlana Martinenko and Anna Schamowa .
The year 2005 saw an Iris Smith in excellent shape. She was again American champion before Ali Bernard and also won the World Cup trials over this wrestler. At the World Championships in Budapest , she won over Stanka Slatewa from Bulgaria , Agnieszka Wieczczek from Poland , Anita Schätzle from Germany and the five-time world champion Kyoko Hamaguchi from Japan , who she won with 2: 1 rounds and 5: 2 techn. Points hit and became the new world champion .
In the next few years she did not achieve such great success. At the US Championships from 2007 to 2011, she landed four times in second and once in third place. Also in the World Championship eliminations and the Olympic Trials in 2008 she could not prevail. At least one of the following wrestlers always placed in front of her in these competitions and thus blocked her starts at the international championships: Kristie Marano (Kristie Davis), Stephany Lee, Ali Bernard or Jenna Pavlik . In 2010 she had another great success, because she became CISM military world champion in Lahti / Finland with victories over Lijun Yang, China , Agnieszka Wieszczek and Wolha Chilko from Belarus .
