Simeon Atanassow Schterew ( Bulgarian Симеон Щерев ; born February 8, 1959 in Mikrevo , Blagoevgrad Oblast ) is a former Bulgarian wrestler . He was 1981 World Champion and 1982, 1983 and 1984 European champion in free style in the featherweight .

Career

Simeon Schterew, who began wrestling as a teenager , was delegated to the Bulgarian top club Levski-Spartak Sofia after his first major successes in the junior sector, where experienced coaches trained him to become an excellent freestyle wrestler. Already in 1979 he made his debut at international championships with a victory at the Balkan Games in Yambol in featherweight. In the same year he was vice world champion of the junior featherweight division in Ulaanbaatar behind the Soviet athlete Magomet-Gassan Abuschew , but in front of Raúl Cascaret , Kuba and Kazuhito Sakae from Japan .

In 1980 he was also used at the European Championships in Prievidza with the seniors. He reached there with four wins and one defeat against Magomed-Gassan Abuschew in the final, the 2nd place. Not he, but the more experienced Miho Dukow , was sent to the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow by the Bulgarian Wrestling Association .

At the European Championships in 1981 in Łódź , Simeon Schterew was used again. He landed five wins in Łódź, beating u. a. the two German representatives Erhard Pocher from Jena and Michael Kuhn from Witten . In the semifinals he was defeated by the Soviet athlete Busai Ibragimow on points and came in 3rd place. Simeon Schterew celebrated the greatest success of his career at the world championships in Skoplje that year . He became world featherweight champion with seven wins . His toughest competitors were Kokichi Sugino from Japan , Jozsef Orban from Hungary and Marian Skubacz from Poland .

1982 Simeon Schterew was in Varna for the first time also European champion , this time he also managed a victory over Busai Ibragimow, but could not defend his title at the World Cup in Edmonton. The reason for this was that the Olympic champion and multiple world champion in bantamweight Sergei Beloglasow had risen to the featherweight division and defeated Simeon Schterew in the final on points.

In 1983 Simeon Schterew won his second European title in Budapest ahead of the new Soviet starter Ivan Grigoryev and his old rivals Jozsef Orban and Marian Skubacz. At the 1983 World Cup in Kiev he reached 3rd place after losing in the pool final against Viktor Alexejew from the USSR by defeating Kazuhito Sakae from Japan.

In 1984 Simeon could only start at the European Championships in Jönköping because of the boycott of the Olympic Games in Los Angeles by the socialist states . He was there again in excellent shape and was European champion for the third time. In the final battle, he defeated Viktor Alexejew, against whom he had lost at the World Cup last year, but just deserved 8: 6 points.

In 1985 Simeon Schterew started at the European Championships in Leipzig for the first time in the lightweight to counter the strenuous training out of the way. In this new weight class, he immediately achieved 3rd place. At the world championship of the same year in Budapest , he won no medal for the first time in an international championship. After a defeat against Arsen Fadsayev from the USSR in the pool final, he surprisingly lost to the Canadian Pat Sullivan in the battle for the bronze medal and had to be satisfied with 4th place.

In 1986 and 1987, however, he again won three medals at the four starts he made. At the European Championships in 1986 in Athens he was after a final defeat against Abdulla Magomedow from the USSR Vice European Champion and at the World Championships of the same year in Budapest he finished third by beating Andre Metzger from the USA . He also took this place at the European Championships in 1987 in Veliko Tarnovo, while he only finished 5th in the lightweight championship in 1987 in Clermont-Ferrand .

In 1988 Simeon Schterew finally got the chance to fight for an Olympic medal in Seoul . He had trained back to featherweight because he figured he had greater chances of a medal in this weight class. His expectations were also met, even if he did not win the gold medal. The way to do this was blocked by the outstanding American John Smith , who defeated him in the pool final. In the battle for the bronze medal , he then defeated the Iranian Ali Akbar Fallah.

After a long break on the international wrestling mat, which lasted from 1989 to 1994, Simeon Schterew tried a comeback at the 1995 World Championships in Atlanta with a view to the 1996 Olympic Games in the same city where he wanted to start again. This went wrong, however, because he dropped out early in Atlanta and only finished 14th, which ended his comeback attempt.

Simeon Schterew is now a coach in the Bulgarian Wrestling Federation.
