Fevzi Şeker

Fevzi Şeker (born July 27, 1962 in Sivas , Turkey, † December 15, 2011 in Elmadağ , Turkey ) was a Turkish wrestler . He was European champion in free style in 1990 in lightweight.

Career

Fevzi Şeker started wrestling in his hometown of Sivas in 1972 . After he had advanced to the national top of freestyle wrestlers as a junior, he moved to the sports club Fatih Güres Külübünde Istanbul . Later he also wrestled for Tofaş SAS Spor Kulübü , Simtel Spor Külübü and İskenderun Demircelik Spor Külübünde . The coaches who mainly looked after him in his career were Servet Meric, Nasuh Akar and Muharrem Atik.

He started his international wrestling career at the age of 17 in 1979. That year he took second place in the lightweight at the Balkan Games in Yambol . In 1981 he came in the Junior World Championships in Vancouver lightweight on an excellent 3rd place. In that year he also started at the European Senior Championships in Lodz , where he won the lightweight with a victory over Janos Zsura from Hungary a . Losses against Karl-Heinz Ruch from Germany and Jukka Rauhala from Finland took 7th place.

In 1983 Fevzi Şeker celebrated his first major success in the senior category at the European lightweight championship in Budapest by winning the European runner-up. He lost in Budapest only in the final against the Bulgarian Kamen Penew . At this year's World Cup in Kiev , he disappointed and only came in 15th without a win.

At the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles, he reached 3rd place in his pool with two wins and two losses against Masakazu Kamimura from Japan and You In-tak from South Korea . He could only fight for 5th place. He also lost this fight against the Australian Zsigmond Kelevitz and finished 6th.

1985 Fevzi Şeker was again runner-up European lightweight champion in Leipzig . On the way there he conquered u. a. the strong Bulgarian Simeon Schterew . In the final battle he lost to the multiple world champion Arsen Fadsayev from the Soviet Union . Afterwards he also won medals at the European Championships in 1987 in Veliko Tarnovo / Bulgaria and in Martigny / Switzerland . He won there each a bronze medal in the welterweight, in which he had since risen.

At the European Championships in Manchester in 1988 , he only came in 10th place in the welterweight division. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 he was not used and also at the World Championships in 1989 in Martigny he only came in 10th place.

He achieved the greatest success of his career at the 1990 European Championships in Poznan , where he had trained back into the lightweight. He won there in the final over the German champion Georg Schwabenland just 1-0 techn. Points and became European champion .
