Elmadağ is a municipality and a coincident İlçe (state administrative district) in the province of Ankara . The municipality belongs to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality ( Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi ), which includes all municipalities in the province. Elmadağ is thus a district municipality of the city of Ankara and all settlements in the district belong to the Elmadağ municipality as mahalle . The name means apple mountain in German and is derived from the same name of a mountain ( Elmadağ ) in the south of the district.

geography

The Elmadağ District ( İlçe ) borders on the Mamak and Altındağ Districts to the west, the Akyurt and Kalecik Districts of Ankara Province to the north, the Kırıkkale Province to the east and the Balâ District to the south . The central town is 41 km from the center of Ankara on the motorway-like road from Ankara to Samsun . The landscape is largely rugged in relief. The mountains in the north and south of the district reach heights of just under 2000 m.

history

Elmadağ already existed as a village in Ottoman times and was called Asi Yozgat . Mentioned in Ankara's court registers for 400 years, it was a village on a bottleneck ( derbent köyü ) used as a camp for caravans. Within the sanjak of Ankara, Asi Yozgat belonged to its central ( Merkez ) kaza (originally judicial, later administrative district, forerunner of İlçe) and to nahiye Kasaba-i Balâ . In 1928 Asi Yozat became the center of a newly founded Bucak . In 1936 this was separated from the Balâ district and added to the newly formed İlçe Çankaya. In 1941 Asi Yozgat was given its current name Elmadağ and in 1944 received the status of a municipality (Belediye). In 1960 the Bucak was then elevated to İlçe. In the course of belonging to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality since 2004, the villages and other municipalities of the district were gradually incorporated into the central municipality and in 2008 the former municipality of Lalahan was incorporated into Mamak.
