Nallıhan is a municipality and a coincident İlçe (state administrative district) in the Turkish province of Ankara . The municipality belongs to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality ( Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi ), which includes all municipalities in the province. Although Nallıhan is a suburb of the city of Ankara and all settlements in the district belong to the municipality of Nallıhan as mahalle , the area gives the impression of a remote rural district because of its remote location in the far west of the province and the less urbanized settlement pattern. The name is derived from a caravanserai ( Han ) that the later Grand Vizier Gümülcineli Damat Nasuh Pascha had built at the end of the 16th century. In terms of folk etymology , the name is interpreted as “inn with the horseshoe” (Turkish: nal ), but the name is more derived from a local river, the Nallı Suyu , whereby the name, as the older traditional form Naallu shows, has nothing to do with it has to do with a horseshoe.

geography

The district ( İlçe ) Nallıhan is the westernmost district of the Ankara province and pushes itself like a spur between the provinces Bolu in the north and Eskişehir in the south. In the east it borders on the Beypazarı district . The central village is 161 km from the center of Ankara on the D140, which leads from Ankara via Göynük and Geyve to Istanbul . In earlier times this was the main route from Istanbul to Baghdad .

The district through which the Sakarya flows has a lively relief with mountains and valleys. The mountains in the south and east of the district are mostly bare, to the west and north the forest with coniferous forests and oaks increases. A total of 48% of the area is forested, 25% is suitable for arable farming, 22% is pasture and wasteland and 5% is scrubland. Climatically, the district lies in a transition area between inner Anatolian and western Pontic climates.

The economy of the district is characterized by agriculture. Significant branches are in particular beekeeping, silkworm breeding and the cultivation of pulses, vegetables and fruits. Some systems for generating electricity are of supraregional importance, namely the hydropower plants in the Sarıyar Hasan Polatkan Barajı, Gökçekaya Barajı and Yenice Barajı reservoirs and, due to the coal deposits there, the Çayırhan thermal power plant.

There are several nature reserves in the district, including a bird sanctuary and an area where wild sheep are to be settled.

Nallıhan is known for the carpets and woven kilims knotted there, as well as for embroidery and wire filigree work.

history

Nallıhan is one of the small towns in Anatolia that can look back on a longer, centuries-old existence.

The area around Nallıhan was settled by Turks since 1073 and belonged to the empire of the Danischmenden and later to the Sultanate of the Rum Seljuks . From this period there are some Türben who can be attributed to the family of Tabduk Emre . This was a Sufi who is still respected in the region today, and the teacher of Yunus Emre . After the end of the Seljuk Empire, the area of Nallıhan soon came under Ottoman rule .

The district of Nallıhan belonged to the 19th century for Sandzak Hüdavendigar, the forerunner of Hüdavendigâr Vilayet , from which the province of Bursa emerged, and then moved on to Sanjak Ankara. The district ( Nahiye ) and its main town bore the name Karahisar-ı Naallu . The place was not originally where it is today, but probably where there are still remains of settlements at Kayapınar Manor. When the later Grand Vizier Nasuh Paşa moved through the area on his way back from Aleppo to Istanbul in 1594, he had the caravanserai Nallı Han (also: Koca Han ) built with a mosque and a hammam on the site of the present-day location , as well as further in the district Caravanserais Çayır Han and Ulu Han . In addition to the caravanserai, the new center of the district developed, which eventually took its name.
