Göynük is a city and a district in the far west of the Turkish province of Bolu . The place is about 80 kilometers southwest of the provincial capital Bolu .
The county is bordered by Mudurnu County to the east and, clockwise from south to north, by Ankara , Eskişehir , Bilecik and Sakarya provinces . The D160 trunk road , which connects Bursa with Bolu, runs through the city and the district from west to east . Then in Göynük the D170 meets from the southeast , which crosses the Kocaman Dağı over the 1140 m high pass Meyitler Geçidi . The mountain is part of the Köroğlu Dağları , to which the entire district belongs. The Göynük Çayı flows through the city and flows further to the west into the Sakarya . About 15 kilometers south of Göynük is the Çayköy Barajı reservoir , ten kilometers north of the Çubuk Gölü .
The district is the second largest in the province and is home to the district town (27 percent of the district's population) and 66 villages ( Köy ) with an average of 170 residents. The largest village is called Himmetoğlu and has 585 inhabitants (as of the end of 2018).
