Polatlı formerly Polad is a district town and district in the Turkish province / city of Ankara . The district is the largest of the metropolitan municipality Ankara is located in the southwest. It borders the Eskişehir and Konya provinces .
Etymology and history
The name Polatlı comes from Turkmen tribes who settled here from the 16th century. The tribal name itself is Persian and means strong or iron . The variants Polatlu and Polatluca also appear in Ottoman documents.
In ancient times the area belonged to Phrygia . About 10 km northwest of the city of Polatlı is the ancient city of Gordion . The city was under Ottoman rule for several centuries . During the Turkish War of Liberation 1919–1922, the important battle of the Sakarya between Turks and Greeks took place near Polatlıs . After the founding of the republic in 1923, the city received the status of a Belediye (municipality) in 1926 .
Residents
In 1907 the Vilayet Ankara had 344,019 Muslim and 19,531 non-Muslim residents. After the Turkish war of liberation and the population exchange between Turkey and Greece , the Greeks in Ankara were also exchanged for Turks from Greece. In a census in March 1927, 10,838 Turks , 2,557 Tatars , 742 Kurds and 312 Bosniaks lived in Polatlı .
