Yenimahalle is a municipality in the province of Ankara , the area of which coincides with that of the İlçe (state administrative district) of the same name . The municipality belongs to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality (Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi) and, as a district municipality, forms the core city, the closed settlement area of Ankara, with the other district communities Altındağ , Çankaya , Etimesgut , Keçiören and Mamak . The urbanized communities of Pursaklar and Sincan have grown together with this core city in terms of development . The other municipalities of the Ankara Province also belong to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality, but form spatially separate settlements on the other side of the motorway ring around Ankara and have in some cases retained the character of small-town centers of rural districts regardless of the administrative allocation.

The area of Yenimahalle has been divided into two parts since the İlçe Etimesgut was separated.

development

Yenimahalle is, as the name (German: Neues Stadtviertel ) indicates, a very young community, even if the number of inhabitants has by far exceeded the scope of a mahalle . This usually has a population of less than 10,000 inhabitants, even those with a population of less than 1,000 are not uncommon. Only in large cities can the population be a few tens of thousands. According to the 2018 surveys, the mahalles in Ankara Province have between 127 and 50,876 inhabitants. The number of Mahalles belonging to Yenimahalle is currently 57 (2013 was 65). The majority of the population consists of blue-collar workers and civil servants.

In order to alleviate the housing shortage in Ankara in the 1940s, the mayor of Ankara at the time, Dr. Ragıp Tüzün, initiated planning work for the foundation of the new settlement. Settlement space was to be created for the less wealthy working class and civil servant families. Construction began in 1949. A separate law contained provisions such as the acquisition of land by the city, the group of beneficiaries, construction obligations and tax breaks.

In 1957, Yenimahalle became the center of its own İlçe. In 1966 the Bucak Etimesgut was dissolved and incorporated into Yenimahalle, but in 1990 it was spun off from Yenimahalle as a separate municipality and İlçe of its own. In 1983 the Bucak Sincan was spun off and its own İlçe.

Administration and economy

Yenimahalle consists of the five district regions (Turkish Semt Birimi ) Karşıyaka . Gazi , Çayyolu , Batıkent and Şentepe , who each report to a coordinator for the associated mahalles . In Yenimahalle, trade and industry have settled on a large scale. Yenimahalle houses three larger commercial and industrial areas: İvedik , Ostim ( acronym for Ortadoğu Sanayi ve Ticaret Merkezi , in German Industry and Trade Center Middle East , the largest industrial area in Turkey for small and medium-sized companies with 5000 companies and 50,000 employees) and Gimat (acronym for Gıda ve İhtiyaç Maddeleri Ankara Toptancıları , in German Ankara wholesaler for food and necessities , according to its own information the largest wholesale center for food in Europe and the Middle East). There are also other industrial parks.

Agriculture, mostly arable farming (wheat, barley, chickpeas, potatoes, sunflowers), and vegetables are also grown on irrigated areas on 14,488 hectares in the municipality.

Facilities and sights

Yenimahalle also houses the Ankamall , a huge shopping center, the AŞTİ long-distance bus station (acronym for Ankara Şehirlerarası Terminal İşletmesi ), the Cumhurbaşkanlığı Sarayı and the Ataturk Orman Çiftliği , where the zoological garden of Ankara used to be.

Even if Yenimahalle is a young city, it has a historical structure: At the entrance of Yenimahalle from the city center of Ankara, next to the modern main street , you can see the Akköprü , a Seljuk bridge over the Ankara Çayı from 1222.
