Ayaş is a municipality and a coincident İlçe (state administrative district) in the province of Ankara . The municipality belongs to the Ankara Metropolitan Municipality ( Ankara Büyükşehir Belediyesi ), which includes all municipalities in the province.
geography
Ayaş is 58 km from the closed settlement area of Ankara and is separated from it by road passes over 1100 m high (Aysantı Geçidi: 1190 m, Ayaşbeli: 1195 m). It is located on the inside of a foothill of the Pontic Mountains in relatively green surroundings in a deep valley. The water flowing in it belongs to the catchment area of the Sakarya . The İlçe area is relatively wooded.
Of the agricultural products, the wool of the angora goats as well as mulberries , sweet cherries and especially tomatoes are worth mentioning. Another branch of the economy is tourism, due to the location on the edge of the mountains and the occurrence of thermal springs that are suitable for drinking and bathing cures. 14 km north of the city is the Asartepe Dam on İlhan Çayı .
Historical
Ayaş is an ancient settlement that flourished as early as the Ottoman period. It had already come under Ottoman rule in 1354 and is already mentioned in Evliya Çelebi with its hostels, bath houses, fountains, gardens and vineyards. Its location on a branch of the Silk Road that led to Istanbul via Ankara favored the development of culture, trade and commerce and the early development of administrative institutions. At that time the population was larger than it is today. Ayas became a separate community as early as the 19th century. During the genocide of the Armenians , Ayaş was the assembly camp and place of execution for numerous Armenian intellectuals deported from Istanbul from 1915 onwards .
