Jörg Helmdach
Jörg Helmdach (born November 28, 1964 in Dortmund ) is a former German wrestler .
Career
Jörg Helmdach started wrestling at KSV Witten in 1971. This association was known for its good youth work in those years. It is therefore not surprising that Jörg Helmdach, under the guidance of trainers Fritz Schrader , Klaus Rost and Detlef Schmengler, first advanced into the national and then also into the international top of freestyle wrestlers. At the age of 16 and 17, respectively, he was part of the KSV Witten team in 1980 and 1981, which won the German team championship in those years. In 1981 he took 2nd place in the free style in the weight class up to 52 kg body weight behind Rolf Monschau from Bonn - Duisdorf and in 1982 he won this title in the class at the German A-Youth championship (internal designation: "Juniors") up to 60 kg body weight.
In 1982 he also celebrated his first major success at an international championship. At the Junior World Championship (Juniors) in Colorado Springs, he was runner-up in the featherweight world champion behind the American Joe Ghezzi but ahead of the Soviet starter Rustam Gadschiew . At the Junior World Championships (Espoirs = age group up to the age of 20) in 1983 in Los Angeles , he was not quite as successful, but was able to assert himself in 6th place in a strong competition.
In 1986 Jörg Helmdach won his first title at the German senior featherweight championship. In 1987 he was in the final of the German championship again with his club mate and training partner Ralf Lyding . Since both wrestlers knew each other very well, no actions took place, with the result that both wrestlers were disqualified and placed in 2nd place. The title of German featherweight champion was not awarded that year. Ralf Helmdach was then used at the European Championships in Veliko Tarnovo , Bulgaria . But he had to pay a lot of money there and was not placed after two defeats.
In 1988 Jörg Helmdach won the German championship ahead of Ralf Lyding and was therefore used both at the European championships in Manchester and at the Olympic Games in Seoul . At both events he was able to fully convince and assert himself with a 5th place among the complete world elite. In Manchester he won the fight for 5th place over the Turk Ali M. Qatar and in Seoul he achieved a 5-4 point victory over the world class athlete Awirmediin Enchee from Mongolia .
In 1989 Jörg Helmdach was used at the World Championships in Martigny / Switzerland . He lost his two fights there against Agim Ejupi from Yugoslavia (2: 5 points) and against Karsten Polky from Luckenwalde (1: 2 points) and could not place himself.
After that he did not start at any other international championships. Jörg Helmdach studied sport and then worked as a trainer for the German Wrestling Federation (DRB). Since 2006 he has been the head coach of the freestyle wrestlers in the DRB, but was replaced by Alexander Leipold in 2009 .
