Günter Laier (born January 23, 1961 in Rauenberg ) is a former German wrestler .

Career

Günter Laier comes from a family of wrestlers and started wrestling at KSV Malsch . His first coach was his father Paul Laier. His brothers Klaus Laier and Wolfgang Laier were also among the top German class. He grew up with his family, father Paul, mother Anneliese, his brothers Klaus, Wolfgang and his sister Helga at the foot of the Letzenberg. In 1974 and 1975 Günter Laier, who mainly wrestled in the free style, became German student champion (now youth B) in the weight classes up to 44 kg and 52 kg body weight. In 1977 he was also the German junior bantamweight champion ahead of Dieter Höfler from Aalen .

Although actually still a youngster, Günter Laier started in 1977 and 1979 at the Grand Prix of the Federal Republic of Germany and fought for a 4th and 5th place in the bantamweight division against strong international competitors. In 1981 the German Wrestling Association sent him to the Junior World Championships in Vancouver , where he achieved a good 6th place in the featherweight division.

At the German senior championships, Günter Laier stood on the podium for the first time in 1978 (at the age of 17) as second. He placed behind Hans Partsch from Schorndorf , but ahead of the multiple German flyweight champion Mario Sabattini from Freiburg-St.Georgen . In 1979 G. Laier became the German champion of youth, juniors and seniors, which so far only 3 German wrestlers have achieved and today it seems almost impossible. In 1979 in the bantamweight and 1985 in the featherweight he was German champion seniors. In total, he achieved eight placements among the top three winners.

In addition, Günter Laier, who had switched from KSV Malsch to KSV Östringen and then to AV Reilingen , won the German team championship with AV Reilingen in 1982 with a victory over KSV Witten 07. As an active player and ultimately as an active trainer, Laier and AV Reilingen reached the finals 13 times in 13 years and was 10 times in the top four.

At international championships Günter Laier was used at the European championship in 1982 in Varna and at the European championship in 1985 in Leipzig , both times in the featherweight division. While he remained unplaced in Varna without a win, he came in a good 6th place in Leipzig.

Günter Laier, who joined the Bundeswehr early on , was particularly successful as a participant in the CISM military world championships. Practically all military sports associations in the world belonged to the CISM, with the exception of the former Eastern Bloc countries. At the CISM World Championships in 1983 in Villeurbanne / France , Günter Laier became world champion of this organization in the featherweight category, ahead of the Venezuelan Elio Inojosa and the Iranian S. Anssari. In 1984 he won 2nd place in Philadelphia. In 1988 in Palermo and in 1990 in Quantico / USA he was CISM vice world champion in featherweight.

Even as an active player, the AV Reilingen used him as a youth trainer, where he also reaped the first fruits of his coaching career with third place at the German student team championships and some medals and placements at German individual championships. From 1988 to 1990 Günter Laier was the first wrestler to be trained as a state-certified certified trainer at the trainer academy in Cologne. From 1990 to 1992 Laier was national coach of the offspring in free style. Since 1998 he has been the regional trainer in the North Baden Wrestling Association. In 1997 he became the father of his son, who is looking for other sporting challenges (football and golf). In 2007 he was named Trainer of the Year by the state sports association BW.
