Career
Adeline Gray is from Colorado . She attended several high schools there and graduated from Bear Creek High School in Lakewood . She is now a student at the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs . She is a member of the New York Athletics Club , but trains at the US Wrestling Association's training center in Colorado Springs. Her trainers are or were her father George Gray and Wladislaus Isboinikow. It is 1.73 meters tall and starts in the weight class up to 67 kg body weight.
She achieved her first successes as a wrestler in 2007 when she was US Junior Champion (Cadets). She repeated this success in 2008 and was also US Junior Champion. This year she also took part in the US women's world championship elimination and took an excellent 2nd place there behind Elena Piroschkowa . Before that she had become a 17-year-old junior world champion (age group up to 20 years of age) in Istanbul in July 2008 . With Chiaki Iijima, Japan , Olga Kalinina, Kazakhstan and Otschirbatyn Nasanburmaa from Mongolia , she had to defeat three very difficult opponents.
In 2009, Adeline Gray was again US Junior Champion and was also US Women's Champion for the first time. She then also won the World Championship elimination tournament in the weight class up to 67 kg in front of Christen Paysse and Lauren Knight. At the Junior World Championships in Ankara in 2009 she was unable to defend her title because she lost her first fight there against Sandra Makela from Sweden. She was eliminated and only came in 9th place. She then did better at the Women's World Cup in Herning / Denmark . There she won over Maria Müller , Germany , then lost to Julija Barnowskaja from Russia , won over Ma Yan from the People's Republic of China and lost the fight for a World Cup bronze medal against Ifeoma Iheanacho from Nigeria . She finished in a good 5th place in her World Cup debut as an 18-year-old.
In 2010 Adeline Gray injured herself early in the year and was therefore unable to take part in either the international or national championships this year.
In 2011 she was again American Junior Champion. This year, the US Wrestling Association held two World Championship eliminations (trials). First of all, one for the Olympic weight classes. Adeline Gray took part, but had to train in the weight class up to 63 kg. She convinced and defeated the former world champion Kristie Marano (married Davis) in the final battle . Then she started at the World Championship trials in the weight class up to 67 kg and won the final there over Stephany Lee , the former world champion in the weight class up to 72 kg.
In 2011 she started again at the Junior World Championship, which took place in Bucharest . You defeated there u. a. Maria Selmaier from Germany, Ewelina Nikolowa from Bulgaria and Alenia Stadnik Machinja from Ukraine , before losing in the final to Sara Dosho from Japan. At the women's world championship in Istanbul , she lost in her first fight against the later world champion, the previously completely unknown Shelok Dolma from the People's Republic of China . With victories over the three-time world champion Martine Dugrenier from Canada and Burcu Orskaya from Turkey, she won a bronze medal at the World Championships .
In 2012, Adeline Gray tried to qualify for participation in the Olympic Games in London at the US Olympic Trials. She trained in the weight class up to 63 kg, but failed because of Elena Piroschkowa and was therefore not at the start in London. However, it was used at the women's world championship, which took place after the Olympic Games in Strathcoona County / Canada, and was world champion there with victories over D. Manolowa, Bulgaria, Yoshike Inoue, Japan, Kaur Navjot, India and Dorothy Yeats , Canada.
In 2013 she competed in the weight class up to 72 kg at the World Championships in Budapest. She won there over Andrea Carolina Olaya Gutierrez, Colombia, then lost to Zhang Fengliu , China, but won a bronze medal in the consolation round with victories over Güzal Manurowa, Kazakhstan and Yasemin Adar, Turkey.
In March 2014, Adeline Gray started at the Team World Cup in Tokyo in the new weight class up to 75 kg. She was in fantastic shape in Tokyo and successively defeated Otschirbatyn Burmaa , Mongolia, the multiple ex-world champion Kyoko Hamaguchi , Japan, Zsanett Nemeth, Hungary and the reigning world champion Zhang Fengliu, who she outclassed with 10: 1 points. At the 2014 World Cup in Tashkent, she was able to build on this excellent performance and won for the second time in her career with victories over Zhou Qian, China, Yasemin Adar, Turkey, Hiroe Suzuki , Japan, Epp Mae , Estonia and Aline da Silva Ferreira , Brazil World champion. The special thing about it was that for the first time in the history of women's wrestling, two women wrestlers from the American continent faced each other in a World Championship final.
Also in 2015 Adeline Gray was successful at the major international championships. She won the Pan American Games in Toronto in the weight class up to 75 kg in front of Justina di Stasio, Canada, Lisset Hechevarria Medina from Cuba and Aline da Silva Ferreira. At the World Championships in Las Vegas, she won the title again a little later in the same weight class with victories over Naranchimeg Gelegjamts, Mongolia, Wasilisa Marsaliuk , Belarus, Daria Osocka, Poland, Aline da Silva Ferreira and Zhou Qian.
In April 2016, Adeline Gray won the US Olympic Trials ahead of Victoria Francis . At the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, however, she experienced a bitter disappointment. Arrived as the favorite, she won her first fight over Andrea Carolina Olaya Gutierrez from Colombia, but lost to Wasilisa Marsaliuk in the quarter-finals. Since she was eliminated in the next round, Adeline Gray was also eliminated and only finished in 7th place, which was disappointing for her.
In 2017 she hardly appeared and did not start in the US World Cup elimination. In December 2017, however, she was back in the US team at the Team World Cup in Cheboksary. She started there three times and defeated Masako Furuichi from Japan, Alena Perepelkina from Russia and Otschirgan Urtnasan from Mongolia.
Adeline Gray started 2018 with a victory at the Klippan Lady Open in Klippan (Sweden). In the new weight class up to 76 kg, she defeated the reigning world champion of 2017 Yasemin Adar from Turkey in the final . At the Pan American Championship in Lima in 2018, she also won unchallenged in her weight class. In the final, she beat Andrea Carolina Olaya Guiterrez from Colombia prematurely. At this year's World Championships in Budapest she was back in the new weight class up to 76 kg. In Budapest she defeated Epp Mae from Estonia, Elmira Sisdikowa from Kazakhstan, the 2016 Olympic champion Erica Wiebe and in the final the world champion of the previous year in the weight class up to 75 kg Yasemin Adar from Turkey. The victory over Yasemin Adar was particularly impressive, because Adeline Gray caught Yasemin Adar with a leg clamp, spun her five times and thus achieved an early victory with a score of 13: 1.
In April 2019, Adeline Gray became Pan American champion in the weight class up to 76 kg in Buenos Aires. In the quarter-finals she beat the 2016 Olympic champion Erica Wiebe. In the same year she was again world champion in the weight class up to 76 kg in Nur-Sultan. In the semifinals she defeated Aline Focken and in the finals the Japanese Hiroe Minagawa Suzuki.
