Lakewood [ ˈleɪkwʊd ] is an American city in the state of Colorado , in the immediate vicinity of the state capital Denver . It is the largest city in Jefferson County and the fifth largest in the state with around 143,000 residents . In addition to public service and the telephone industry, medical technology company Gambro Renal Products and FirstBank of Colorado are among the city's top employers. Another large company with headquarters in Lakewood is the mining company Energy Fuels .
