Lamar is a Home Rule Municipality in the US state of Colorado and is the county seat of Prowers County . In 2010 the city had 7804 inhabitants. Lamar has a station on the Amtrak -distance Southwest Chief . The construction of the second part of an international, large-scale physical experiment, the Pierre Auger Observatory in the northern hemisphere to investigate high-energy cosmic rays , is planned near Lamar.

Lamar is located on the Arkansas River in the southeast of the state, east of Pueblo . Lamar geographical coordinates are 38 ° 5 ' N , 102 ° 37' W .
According to the United States Census Bureau , the city has an area of 11.0 km² , all of which is land.
Demographics
At the time of the United States Census 2000, Lamar had 8,869 people. The population density was 809.5 people per km ². There were 3656 housing units at an average of 333.7 per km ². The population consisted of 76.24% of White , 0.38% Black or African American , 1.48% Native American , 0.47% Asian , 0.05% Pacific Islander , 18.81% said other races to belong and 2.57% named two or more races. 36.54% of the population declared to be Hispanic or Latinos of any race.
The residents of Lamar distributed to 3324 households out of which 36.0% were living in children under 18 years. 49.2% of households are married, 13.3% had a female head of the household without a husband and 32.4% did not form families. 28.2% of households were made up of individuals and someone lived in 12.4% of all households aged 65 years or older. The average household size was 2.59 and the average family size was 3.18.
The urban population was divided between 29.1% minors, 12.1% 18–24 year olds, 26.1% 25–44 year olds, 19.5% 45–64 year olds and 13.1% aged 65 years or more. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 women there were 98.6 men. For every 100 women over the age of 18, there were 95.8 men.
The median household income in Lamar was 28,660 US dollars and the median family income reached the amount of 32,560 US dollars. The median income for men was $ 24,145 versus $ 20,133 for women.
