Coordinates: 34 ° 2 ′ S , 151 ° 3 ′ E Sutherland Shire is a local government area (LGA) in the Australian state of New South Wales . Sutherland belongs to the metropolis of Sydney , the capital of New South Wales. The area is 333.6 km² and has about 218,000 inhabitants.
Sutherland is located south of Botany Bay on the southeastern edge of Sydney on the Pacific coast and is about 20 to 35 km from the city center. The area includes 92 districts: Alfords Point, Bangor, Bangor Heights, Barden Ridge, Bonnet Bay, Bonnie Vale, Bundeena, Burraneer, Burraneer Bay, Burraneer Point, Caravan Head, Caringbah, Caringbah North, Caringbah South, Como, Como West, Coronation Bay, Cronulla, North Cronulla, Cronulla South, Curracurrang, Curracurrong, Dolans Bay, Engadine, North Engadine, Engadine South, Fishermans Bay, Forest Island, Fosters Flat, Garie, Garie Beach, Garrawarra Hospital, Grays Point, Gundamaian, Gunnamatta Bay, Heathcote, Illawong, Jannali, Jannali West, Kangaroo Point, Kareela, Kirrawee South, Kurnell, Lilli Pilli, Loftus, Loftus Heights, Lucas Heights, Maianbar, Mansion Point, Menai, Menai Central, Menai East, Menai Heights, Miranda, Miranda North , Oyster Bay, Port Hacking, Prince Edward Park, Royal National Park, Royal National Park East, Sandy Point, South Gymea, Southgate Center, Sutherland, North Sutherland, West Sutherland, Sylvan Headland, Sylvania, Sylvania Heights, Sylvania Southga te, Sylvania Waters, Taren Point, Towra Point, Wanda, Wanda Beach, Warumbul, Waterfall, The Waterrun, Wattamola, North West Arm, Woolooware, Woronora, Woronora Dam, Woronora Heights, Woronora River, Yarrawarrah, Yowie Bay, Yowie Point and Parts of Gymea, Gymea Bay and Kirrawee. The council's administrative headquarters are in the Sutherland district in the north of the LGA.

The Sutherland Shire Council has 15 members who are elected by the residents of the five wards (three each from Wards A through E). These five districts are determined independently of the districts. The mayor of the council is also recruited from among the councilors.
