Justina Renay di Stasio (born November 22, 1992 in Burnaby , British Columbia , Canada ) is a Canadian wrestler . In 2018 she became world champion in the weight class up to 72 kg
Career
Justina di Stasio, of Greco-Italian descent, grew up in Coquitlam , British Columbia. She was a versatile athlete in high school and didn't decide to wrestle until she was 14. As an adult, she weighs around 75 kg with a height of 1.71 meters, which makes her one of the highest weight class in women's wrestling. After high school, she attended Simon Fraser University in Burnaby and started for the Burnaby Mountain Wrestling Club (WC) . She is mainly trained by Michael Jones and Justin Abdou. For some time she has been an assistant trainer at the Burnaby Wrestling WC.
She started her career as a wrestler in 2006. In 2011 she became Canadian Junior Champion in the weight class up to 72 kg body weight. In the same year she made her debut on the international wrestling mat at the Junior World Championships in Bucharest in the same weight class. After two victories, she lost there against the Chinese Zhou Feng and finished in 7th place.
In 2012, 2013 and 2014 she won medals at the Canadian championship in the weight class up to 72 kg and in 2015 she was the first Canadian champion in the women. In Canada, she had or still has extremely tough competition in her weight class and in the weight class including Dorothy Yeats , the 2013 world champion and Erica Wiebe , the 2016 Olympic champion, against which she first had to prevail in order to win the Olympic Games or to be able to start world championships. However, she did not make the leap to the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
Justina di Stasio won her first medal at an international women's championship at the 2014 Pan American Championship in Mexico City, where she won a bronze medal in the weight category up to 67 kg. In 2015 she became the Pan American champion in the weight class up to 75 kg in Santiago de Chile ahead of the strong Cuban Lisset Hechevarria Medina. In the same year she won in July at the Pan American Games in Toronto in the weight class up to 75 kg behind the American Adeline Gray, the silver medal. In September 2015 Justina di Stasio was used in Las Vegas in the weight class up to 75 kg for the first time at a world championship for women. She lost her first fight there against Wasilisa Marsaliuk from Belarus on points. The Marsaliuk did not reach the final, she was eliminated and only came in 19th place.
In February 2016 Justina di Stasio fought for the Pan-American championship title again in Frisco / USA in the weight class up to 75 kg and in October 2016 she became university world champion in the same weight class in Corum / Turkey.
In 2017 she won the Pan-American championship title for the third time in a row in Lauro de Freitas / Brazil in the weight class up to 75 kg. In 2017, she prevailed against last year's Olympic champion Erica Wiebe in the Canadian World Cup qualification and therefore represented her country at the World Cup in Paris. She won there over Switlana Sajenko , Moldova and Pooja Pooja, India, then lost to Wasilisa Marsaliuk, but then won a bronze medal with victories over Aiperi Medet Kizi, Kyrgyzstan and Paliha Paliha , China.
After a weight class reform by the World Wrestling Federation (UWW), she started at the World Championships in Budapest in 2018 in the weight class up to 72 kg. She presented herself there in excellent form and became world champion for the first time with victories over Alexandra Anghel, Romania, Martina Kuenz , Austria, Samar Amer Ibrahim Hamza, Egypt and Nasanburmaa Ochirbat , Mongolia.
In 2019 she was again the winner in the weight class up to 76 kg at the Pan American Games in Lima. In the final, she defeated Aline da Silva Ferreira, Brazil.
